New System - Ready to ooverclock

Featured Replies

hello,Last weekend I assembled a new system dedicated to Fs (both 9 ands 10).Specs:Asrock P67 Pro3 (Bios 1.9)Intel i7 2600K8 Gb Corsair XMS 2000 MHZ 9 10 9 27ASUS GTX-480 (because the new EVGA GTX 580 was still in backorder I kept, for the time being, my 'old' card).Zalman ZM850-HP powersupplySo far I have neen able to overclock this system up to a respectable 4.5 GhzNot bad if I say so myself but I keep on reading that I should be able to reach a safe 4.8 Ghz.Unfortunately, I can't find detailed instructions that apply to this MB.Is there anybody who can help me?ThanksLuc Brusselmans

Hello again, thanks (both posters) for pointing me to those post's.However, I was looking for someone with the same combination of CPU and Mobo to compare the results.I am asking this because I get very much mixed results.Since yesterday and numerous reboots I habe been able to find a sweet spot at 4.8 Ghz.The road that I took was rather bumpy and sometimes devoid of logic.I am at a Vcore of 1.4V at the moment and a multiplier of 48 and everything is running smooth.Sounds great but at 1.4V a multiplier of 46 (4600 Ghz) or 47 (4700 Ghz) is impossible. With those values, my rig will not boot. I (but who am I anyway) find that rather odd...Now, at 48 I get a stable 4800 Ghz and temps at around 39° when idle and 65° when on full load (all on air cooling). All in all I am pleased with the results so far but would like to compare these results with someone with the same combination. Thanks for the great support and that is for all that participate in these forums.Without those people, Simming wouldn't be as fun as it is now.Luc BrusselmansBelgium

Sorry, I cannot help further, you will need one of the OC experts to chime in. If you are at 4.8 stable, I think that is a win. Time to fly!Mark.

Mark,I am not so sure anymore about this being a winner....Looking at the hardware, all is fine but running fs-X is not...At 4.8 Ghz i would think that the sim would run just fine but that's not the case.I checked the tasmanager while flying around in the neighbourhood of Friday harbour and I noticed that the sim was running on all four cores but that the cpu only got used for about 25% (and that is tops...)Knowing that fs-X is cpu dependant I don't think that's normal.Do you have any suggestions?Luc BrusselmansBelgium

Yeah it's normal for FSX... FSX doesn't really use multithreading... rather it won't use all four cores as efficiently as possible.Make sure you have all the service packs installed or Acceleration.Sometimes what you'll see is one core pegged at like 99% and the others low. Or sometimes all will be low.RE: OCing further to 4.8 - have you tried simply upping the multiplier to 48x? You'll probably need a bump or two of vcore and that's about it. Also make sure your LLC is set up to higher levels.OH, perhaps check out this thread - Stephen appears to have a similar setup... and he posted his BIOS screenshttp://forum.avsim.net/topic/337269-bios-settings-examples-displayed/

Ryan, thanks for your answer. It seems (after a night of trial, error and rebooting) that there is no inbetween for my system.Whatever I try, it's or 4.8 Ghz or 4.5 Ghz. All settings in between those two are a no go.Or the system won't go past the bios or the system starts and hangs just after the windows logo.No way I can get it to work. Now, I am pleased with the 4.8 Ghz so I am not complaining. But another item crept up is is nagging me a bit.I have downloaded a bunch of applications to monitor my system. Some of those also monitor the temperature of the processorcores. It's funny but none of them give me the same readings. They all differ. But what worries me the most is the fact that, when I go into the bios and I check the readings there, they are several degrees higher than the ones I get through the windows applications.I guess those from the bios are more in line with reality I expect?Anyone with experience on that?ThanksLuc Brusselmans
