New Computer Build - Component Selection - Feedback Requested

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,I've selected my components for a new computer build specificly targeted at FSX and in particular PMDG B737NGX. Here are the items that I selected:COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Compucase Case with USB 3.0 and Black Interior ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I72600K G.SKILL Ripjaws X + Turbulence II Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-17000CL9D-8GBXLDNoctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM Case was selected for it's numerous front-side USB ports - can't seem to have enough of those ports these days - and to support the CPU cooler.G.SKILL Ripjaws RAM was selected because of compatibility with the CPU cooler - see Noctura's web site.I have several SATA hard drives that I will re-use on the new build. I considered an internal SSD drive for the purposes of an FSX install , but the price of these drives is still such that I'll have to pass on this one for now. If someone can convinence me that this is absolute necessity for FSX, I'll reconsider. Are there any issues/problems/concerns that the experienced builders on here can see with these selections? As always, thanks for your help!Rich BollWichita, KS

Looks like a really nice rig. May be a blue print for my new i7 1155 rig. You may want to take a look at the WD VelociRaptor 10,000rpm HDD's. I installed a 300GB dedicated to FSX based on several recommendations when I built my i7 9** 1366 rig a couple of years ago. It's been a great HDD, fast, quiet and reliable. Lots of folks like the Noctua CPU coolers. What about your PSU? The Corsair AX750 is a really nice modular unit. You didn't mention your video card. The NVidia GTX 500 series is probably the most popular for FSX. I really like the EVGA products and will probably go for the GTX570.Good luck and good simming.

I think you will be better off with the CAS 7 Ripjaws. I have these and the Nochua cooler, no problems with install.http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=58100Mark.

I have an existing PSU along with an NVIDA 460GTX, both of which will find a new home in this new computer. The 460GTX has been a good card. Thanks for the comments!Rich

Thanks Mark,The RAM type, speed, CAS are still question marks. There's been quite a bit of dicussion about which is better for FSX, 1600 with CAS 7 or 2133 with CAS 9. Word is that the 2133 is designed to work best with the I7 Sandybridge systems with the new P68 MOBO. That's one reason why I'm spending bit extra for the MOBO and RAM. I still don't know if that's the right combination, though? Thanks Mark! I appreciate your feedback!

If you end up using a dedicated SSD HDD for your FSX install make sure your operating system is installed on the same drive.I had my OS and FSX installed on my SSD HDD but had all my Documents and Pictures etc on two 1TB WD Drives. Windows 7 has an option to change the location of your documents. This made my system as slow as it had to search for documents on the standard 7200rpm drives. Also load times for other games where as slow as my averagely spected laptop. As soon as I moved my documents back to the SSD it began to perform as expected.Although its not strictly FSX reated I believe it would affect performance slightly.

Meh I'd just put FSX only on the SSD. I've found my loading times to be around 20 seconds after a fresh boot.
