July 4, 201114 yr I just finished linx test and passed for my 980x with an evga x58 sli le board at 4.4 ghz. My big concern are the temps:core 0-88core1-87core2-80core8-80c0re9-88core10-88cpu temperature - 75does this sound right or what should I do my core voltage was at 1.42 anything I shuld be aware and change in my bios ?I would like to get up to 4.5thanks Ronny
July 4, 201114 yr Seems a high to me... I know this can and will vary from system to system... What case are you using? I'm running this on Air. The HAF case cut my temps by 40%... Good luck...! 5Take Care, Will Clark My computer: Intel 14900K, Motherboard ROR Maximus Z790 Formula, PSU Dark Power 1600, Ram DDR5 (7200) Vengeance 32GB CL38, ASUS 4090, Keyboard Logitech ASUS, Mouse ROCCAT LEADR Wireless, Corsair M.2 SSD 4TB x2, Headset Astro A50 Wireless, Microphone Elgato Wave 3, Stream Deck Elgato XL, GoXLR, Loopdeck Live, Chair Steelcase Gesture with Headrest, Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL ROG White, Custom Built water cooling, Ek Lian li xl distro plate, Fittings EK & Bitspower, Monitor LG C1 48 OLED, Desk Speakers Audio Engine A5+ White.
July 4, 201114 yr Author Well I got my temps down a bit for a 4.4ghz overclockhere is the comparison , once again passing on Linx1st time 2nd timecore 0 - 88 83core1 - 87 81core2 - 80 77core 8 - 80 75core 9 - 88 84core 10 -88 83cpu temperature75 68So we have made some improvememts dpes anybody have some voltage settings with the 980x at 4.5 or even 4.4 to get temps down even more. or some suggestions. thanks Ronny
July 4, 201114 yr What program do you use to stress test the CPU/OC and measure the core temps with? What CPU fan/cooler do you use?A thumb of rule is to keep temps below 80C if using a fan cpu cooler, which gives you some headroom for high summer ambient temps.I use OCCT (CPU:OCCT option) to stress test and measure temps with my OC:ed rig during at leas 1 hour. Remember that even if OCCT or some other stress test programs don't fail, that doesn't mean that FSX will be stable. FSX (and previous versions of FS) is the ultimate tool for stress testing an OC:ed system.EDITED: Regarding voltages - these are really chip-individual settings. Lower you voltages in steps and run stress test programs and FSX until isn't stable. Then raise the voltage a notch or two and test again until you reach a stable OC. Very time consuming, but I don't know any other way to find the voltage needed for a specific processor. Remember that no processor, from different manufacturing batches, are identical regarding OC:ing ability and voltage settings.
July 4, 201114 yr I should have asked before are those idle temps or at load....? I'm guessing at load.... 5Take Care, Will Clark My computer: Intel 14900K, Motherboard ROR Maximus Z790 Formula, PSU Dark Power 1600, Ram DDR5 (7200) Vengeance 32GB CL38, ASUS 4090, Keyboard Logitech ASUS, Mouse ROCCAT LEADR Wireless, Corsair M.2 SSD 4TB x2, Headset Astro A50 Wireless, Microphone Elgato Wave 3, Stream Deck Elgato XL, GoXLR, Loopdeck Live, Chair Steelcase Gesture with Headrest, Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL ROG White, Custom Built water cooling, Ek Lian li xl distro plate, Fittings EK & Bitspower, Monitor LG C1 48 OLED, Desk Speakers Audio Engine A5+ White.
July 4, 201114 yr Author for temps use cpuid hardware monitorat idle - tmeps in the cores arein the low 40'scpu - high 20'sso those temps were doing stress test by linx in previous post. you see i have had a lot of problems with this computer so i sent a whole bunch of parts back to them: power supply - 1,000watts, motherboard evga x58 sli le, memory corsair dominator, and the processpr, and here is the catch I originally had an i975 but could never getit to go over 4.0, so instead they sent me this 980x which is new to me, but I"ll take it. I realize that with every processor they are a bit different, even if they are the same. I was just curious what voltages peole are using with a 980x and a evga x58 sli le motherboard ?
July 4, 201114 yr Moderator Something is not right - those temps are way too high.My CPU vCore is 1.33 - I'm at 4.43 on air using Noctua DH14 coolerMy temps under stress test load do not exceed 70C across all the cores.Linx is overkill and doesn't really stress the system as FSX would. Use OCCT.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
July 5, 201114 yr Author Okay I used OCCT (CPU:OCCT] vol 3.1.0 and my temps were a bit better this time around80,78, 74, 73, 80, 77.cpu temp was 65 degreees using cpuid hardware for my temp readings and this is at 4.4 ghzIn additon ran the test for one hour and with no errors.so tell me how this sound cpu v corre was still at 1.40, I would like to get this lower something wrong maybe in my bio settings, or any other suggestions please helme out on this one with this 980x. I mean you have your cpu v core at 1.33I would luv to have that, just don't know why need help on thissorry for mispelling
July 5, 201114 yr aww you guys are lucky... my temps are about the same at 4.17ghz i've got the corsair h50 with indigo extreme TIM, might have to check if I mounted it properly. From what i've gathered the more recent batches of 980x need a bit more voltage for some reason... or maybe i'm using that as an excuse for my clock and temps lol Craig Totenhofer - YMIA FSX PC Win7 Ultimate x64 | i7 980x @3.33GHz | EVGA X58 Classified 3 | Corsair 6GB DDR3 Tripple kit | AMD5870 (Waiting for Nvidia 600 series) | OCZ 240GB IBIS SSD! | 2x WD 1TB Black HDD | Corsair H-50 CPU cooler (Replacing with custom WC loop) Lian-Li PC-50 RSE Case | Corsair AX-1200W Software REX2.0 HD | ORBX AU SP4, YMML & YSCH | PMDG j41 & 737NGX | RealAir Duke Bojotes .CFG tweak & Shader 3.0 mod | ENBseries
July 5, 201114 yr Your temps in OCCT and LinX are fine. Temps in LinX will be higher than OCCT. My OCCT core temps run 73, 77, 70, 70, 73 & 73 across the six cores. LinX runs 84, 88, 79, 80, 84 & 85 across the six cores. With a 980X it is okay to get to 90C while stress testing, but do not go over 90. Personally I do not even like to get close to 90 and have only ran LinX twice on this rig. Next time I run LinX I will have my abient down to 21C so I will not be running LinX again until this winter. For the record my Vcore is 1.36875 in BIOS. All chips are different, all motherboards are different, your combo may need a higher Vcore than mine. The only way to know is to lower your Vcore and stress test, if it BSOD's raise it, if it does not BSOD lower it until it does or until you get errors in OCCT and then bump it back up a notch or two until you pass. Also a higher BCLK generates more heat so if you have a higher BCLK, a lower CPU multi along with a higher Vcore than I do my lower BCLK, higher CPU multi and lower Vcore will generate less heat. I am at 164 * 27 and that give me a OC of 4.44GHz.
July 5, 201114 yr Moderator I agree with Idahosurge - the temps are safe but IMHO they are not fine. Meaning, *IF* you can get them lower - do so. What I would do is redo the thermal paste, cleaning the CPU and heat sink with alcohol and a coffee filter first. Use a top quality paste - what I do is put a dab on the cpu and use an old credit card to spread a thin layer over5 the cpu. Then follow Idahosurge's suggestion to drop the adjust the VCore and BCLK accordingly and see if you can get them all around 70 - 75MAX. The 980X will run just fine all day long at 80C but cooler is better so why not give it a try.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
July 5, 201114 yr My bclk is max at 160, my my board freezes if I have it set any higher. I figured that by elimination which was done by having a very low CPU and memory multi then stressing. My core is set at around 1.4 something but never raises past 1.33 according to the eleet utility, it's because of some CPU feature, I forget what it's called. I'm going to try and reseat the cooler, although from what I understand the h50 is no better than those noctua coolers so I probably shouldn't be surprised by my temps. July 6, 201114 yr Author wanted to thanks everyone for chipping in upon trying to get my temps down in my 980x, which previously was using a 975, but was damaged so the company gave me a 980x in exchange. My 975 could never overclock over 4.0ghz, on this computer.now with the 980x I am at 4.4 ghz and stable ussing OCCT and everytime kept on lowering the cpu voltage and finally got it down to 1.376.temps for the cores at full load running for 1 hour with no errors, and ran it about 5 times, you got to be patient, 75, 72, 68,67, 72, and 70.thats a big improvement from when I started testing yesterday at the begining of this topic, where temps were in the 80'sso finally with this 980x at 4.4 ghz cpu temp at full load with OCCT, and no errors 59 degrees.will probably test a bit more, but right now I am a happy camper.thanks, Ronny
July 6, 201114 yr Do any of you guys have vDroop or Load Line Calibration (LLC) on?
