In the real airplane (B727) you can use either radio and either needle for the ADF/Vor. In FS, it depends on how the programer did it.db.

Some RMI gauges will show two navaids with two indicators. Some have a VOR/ADF switch for each or one of the two indicators. Both VOR receivers and usually one ADF receiver are linked up.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio-magnetic_indicator#Radio-magnetic_indicator_.28RMI.29In the one illustrated the compass/heading scale is slaved to the directional gyro so the aircraft heading is at the top. Therefore the needles point to the navaids you have chosen. Homing on the needle takes you to the navaid but not with the precision of a typical VOR indicator. This is handy for situational awareness especially where a VOR or NDB is situated near the airport. It is also handy in some cases for flying to airway intersections. The single shaft arrow is for VOR 1 and double is for VOR 2. The ADF can be on either input channel. It can serve as a backup function in some situations also partially for an EHSI or advanced navigation display.

The aircraft I am using is an early one and I have found a RMI operated with a Nav1 and Adf, that is ideal for the purpose. Thanks to everyone for their welcomed input.kilgour
