Amazing performance with latest catalyst driver

Featured Replies

After many attempts to get a smooth running sim, I´ve finally succeeded. I´ve installed the latest drivers for my graphic card and low and behold, when I turned on aa in the catalyst control panel to 16x and uncheck aa in fsx, it´s like a whole new sim. The amzing part to me is that crossfire is activated. I´ve read that FSX doesn´t utilize crossfire, but it´s active and everything runs smooth as silk.I landed this morning in Frankfurt RW 25L using the default 747 and the scenery was so amazing especially coming across A5 that it almost looked real enough to make me nervous.Thank for allowing me to share this info.Happy Flying!!George Clark

I use a Sapphire HD 5450 1GB it is a HTPC card with CCC 11.6 and yes they are stable. I have everything on max except water and animation effects to low and 0.

Makes me wonder if hardware technology just needed to catch up. Seems it´s been that way throughout each flightsim version released.

Hardware technology is far ahead of the FS's , simply because FSX is not coded correctly even to run on the latest hardware. FSX was launched before Multi core cpu 's but even after the SP1 & SP2's people face problems by not getting a good decent enjoyable FPS on multi core and they tend to either upgrade there hardware or start tweaking. It is too heavy on the CPU.

George and Ironmaiden,Can you confirm that with CCC 11.6, AA is working with FSX in both windowed and full screen mode ?I am asking because with any ATI/AMD drivers I have tried past 10.7, I could not get AA to work correctly. I have an Asus EAH5850 1GB DDR5, Windows 7 Home Premium x64.I stopped trying new drivers after 11.4, being tired of getting no result :-(I am still using 10.7 as of today.Best regards,Normand

I can confirm the CCC 11.6 with AA in full screen mode it works. switch off fsx AA .Windowed mode I get fps hit as my card is not a gaming card.

Results may vary.. I took a performance hit with these settings.. FSX still flies better without 11.6 drivers/CCC trying to run AA.-Damien

I don´t know what these people are talking about...The 11.6 are old now, I tried them and I removed them, horrible...!There´s even a 11.6b hotfix, which is AMD routine, fixing the crap in the 11.6 I guess...http://downloads.guru3d.com/I keep the 11.5b hotfix drivers they are HOT! wub.gif

I can vouch to getting a boost going to 11.6 over 11.5.Haven't tried the 11.5b or 11.6b though.

I have an ATI HD5970 (which is a cross-fire card)...how do I check that cross-fire is indeed running?

Well Hirgab, I have it displaying in the sim in the upper right corner of the screen in full screen mode. "ATI Crossfire Technology" Before I never had it displaying in the sim or any other game. Also I forgot to mention, I use "Driver Genius Software" to keep all of my drivers up to date with the latest drivers for all hardware and devices.

Normand, I can confirm that it´s working both widowed and full screen mode. Really can´t say how it performs for others but, we´ll just have to wait for further responses.

Thank you George and all the others for your comments. I realize that not everybody is getting the same results with CCC 11.6, but based on George's results, I'm willing to give them a try. The worst that can happen is that the reported boost is only observed on crossfire cards, in which case I would revert to 10.7, but at least now I know that 11.6 AA works well with FSX on someone else's computer, so it might work well on mine too.Best regards,Normand

Well ... I tried both AMD CCC 11.6b and 11.7 drivers and I must say that I am very disapointed by AMD. Even though performance and image quality is good, I saw no improvement compared to 10.7 I was running before. But my disapointment lies with the fact that selecting a preset does nothing. I created preset #1, saved it, created preset #2 (Eyefinity 3x1), saved it, but I am unable to switch back the first preset. When I select the other preset, nothing happens (in both 11.6b and 11.7). I am stucked on the last one created . Trying to open CCC to check the presets gives me a spinning cursor and nothing happens. It does not crash, it simply does not display CCC. I have to reboot to be able to access CCC. Opening CCC after a fresh reboot and selecting an option sometimes gives me an empty popup window. This on a nearly fresh install of Windows 7 x64 (installed 6 days ago with a perfectly functionning CCC 10.7 for my HD5850). I tried installing on top of existing drivers, I tried uninstalling the previous drivers first, with and without Driver Sweeper, with the same bad result. I re-installed CCC 10.7 and everything returned to normal behavior. This is the 3rd computer on which I try new AMD drivers for my Asus HD5850. I am done trying AMD's greatest and newest crappy drivers. When this video card dies, I'll look at buying from the competition. I can't believe how AMD can screw up a function as simple as calling an XML definition file (preset) and applying it on so many drivers in a row. I had the same problem when trying 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, 10.12, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 (skipped 11.5 and 11.6) 11.6b and 11.7, on 3 different computers, but with the same video card (which has always worked very well on the 3 computers using CCC 10.7). For those of you having success with the latest AMD drivers, I am very happy for you. I wish my experience was as good. Best regards to all, and thank you for your inputs. Normand
