Active Sky 2004 Users.. How is it?

Featured Replies

AS2004 really works well for me. I fly the PMDG737 almost exclusively and other than a few glitches that I worked out with some "tweaking", it has been flawless. The Active Sky support is fantastic and Damian and Jim are quick to respond with help. Be sure that you uncheck Render to Texture in FS. This will stop the flickering. The PMDG folks say that R to T should be on, but I have not seen any adverse effects. Get AS2004. You won't be sorry.

Last night I flew from EFRO back to EGCC using ActiveSky weather rather than VATSIM weather I used on the outbound trip and had more instant wind shifts than my only other trip with AS2.I have both AS2 and that other well known weather program and based on 2 flights with AS2 and numerous flights with the other program my impressions are that AS2 just has the edge on the other program in relation to wind shifts, but there is not much in it.The 2 flights with AS2 I may have been lucky and got weather that did not have many wind shifts or it may be down to Damian's smoothing.IMO both programs suffer to a larger or smaller degree with FS9's weather handling but both authors state this is a problem still to be worked out.

I may do that. ActiveSky seems to have come of age, and FSMeteo seems to be waning in functionality and innovation. My FSMeteo subscription comes up in a couple months. My experience with FSMeteo in FS9 has been rather lackluster for me. I can't really see myself renewing unless FSMeteo undergoes a significant overhaul.

I've logged about 5 hours with AS2004, short trips of 150-160 miles at 12-13K, and for me the wind shearing is much reduced and very tolerable. I can't speak for higher altitudes over longer distances. The other night (pre-AS2K4) I hit a spot where I had 8-10 violent changes in wind direction and speed in the course of a few minutes. With AS2004 I have been getting at 2-3 noticeable shears, but they seem a lot smoother. So far I'm very pleased with what they've done, and it sounds like they are working on a fix for some shears that should not be happening at all.AS24K also has an option that I have not tried yet called "Extended Destination Wind Force", which apparently sets the winds globally to be consistent with the destination. I think this means you would have constant wind speed and direction (presumably changing with altitude) everywhere, but would still get the benefit of changing clouds and visibility.

I have a question. I am using AS version 1.92. We had a snowstorm in SLC last night, OVC at 500, Vis 1 mile. Using ActiveSky, it was as though the sky was clear. AS was reporting conditions as the METAR reflected, but there was unobstructed view of the lights below from 10,000 feet. I switched to FS real weather and had an undercast. But still had that wacky bug... see the airport clearly from 10 miles, then at about 5 miles it disappears until 1 mile out (reported vis). Does AS 2004 fix either or both of these issues? 1) No undercast when METAR is reporting an overcast. 2) weird visibility issues.I bought WxRE, but $25 is steep unless 2004 performs better than WxRE. As it is now, FS weather is more realistic than WxRE. Thoughts?
