Help Converting BMP files to DDS

Featured Replies

Hi, I have never re-painted an aircraft in my life, but I would like to batch convert the BMP files from a FS9 aircraft into DDS for use in FSX.I have tried DXTBmp, but that tool seems to only convert one file at a time (there are rather a lot to do) and DDS Converter, which doesn’t seem to work (I suspect it’s something to do with me!)Can anyone here suggest another program that I could try, or make any suggestions as to why DDS Converter is not working?Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ian.

FSX is different than FS9, less files are used in FSX, and there might be many BMP in the kit you are trying to convert that are not needed. Without knowing what you are trying to convert, it's hard to tell what you need to keep and what you need to disregard, that way you will know what to convert. Case and point, Level-D put out an instruction video on converting some of their FS9 livery to be used in FSX. That may help you get the idea on what to do.

Why not use the .bmp files in FSX? They will work OK. As far as FSX using less files than FS9 goes, the textures needed for any model are defined in the model and in no way controlled by the sim version. It may appear that a model in FSX is using less textures than one in FS9 because there are less in any specific FSX texture folder. This is because FSX uses the texture fallbacks, as defined in the texture.cfg, to pool common textures in a folder that all liveries can call from. regards,Joe

Many thanks for your replies. I'm trying to convert the Alphasim Lighning packs for use in FSX, but I'll follow your guidence and tryi it without converting them (at the moment I'm reinstalling Windows7 and FSX) Many thanks, Ian.

How would one convert DDS to BMP? And is there any disadvantage to using bmp instead of dds? Thanksboeing247

What are you trying to convert, FSX to FS9 or the other way around? Depends on what you mean, it all depends on the model and platform you are using.

You can use ImageTool if you have the FSX SDK. You can also use DXTBmp, available here- http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/ There is no advantage to using .bmp over .DDS unless you are trying to convert textures intended for FSX for use in FS9. regards,Joe
