January 9, 200422 yr Does anyone have inside information as to whats going on with this.. anyone know Owen Hewitt on here mind finding out or something? I've tried emailing him and got a blank email back. I'd really like to see this plane finished, and yes I'd definitely pay if it's payware like I heard it was going to be. Theres just no new information and I hope the project isnt dead. Hell, I'd buy the scrap model off him and figure out how to finish it myself :)
January 9, 200422 yr this will get his older POSKY C-17 to show landing gear in FS9http://forum.projectopensky.com/index.php?showtopic=6792 In your FS9.cfg file, there is a section called:[FrameCallNoWarn]Remove any reference to the C-17 from this section and when you run the sim and select the C-17 remember to say NO when it asks you if you want to remove anything.
January 9, 200422 yr Yeah, I can get it to work in 2004 with the gear, but the TR's dont show, and I'd really like to fill McChord up with AI planes, but the FSDS models suck bigtime on framerates. Plus I've seen the picture he had before with the alpha layer (shine?) on it and it looks real nice.
January 10, 200422 yr We get asked about this a lot, much more so lately. The answer is that future of the project isn't clear at this point, but as you can see, the C17 has been recreated in gmax with a good many improvements in all areas. It would need a huge design effort to implement a complete VC with the little available documentation, and for that reason alone, given our other commitments, the C17's future is not clear. It's still far from complete but still looks prettyfair in FS2004. Works better too. Even fps are way up. And the new gearanimation is exquisite.http://www.fsd-international.com/temp/c17/c1701avsim.jpghttp://www.fsd-international.com/team/Steve_signature.gif
January 10, 200422 yr Steve, that is a real thing of beauty. I'd be more than happy with a standard 2D cockpit with sideviews (or maybe not even!) just to get that sucker.Fabulous job. not sure what documentation you'd need, but I bet if you sent that screen cap to somebody at the 437th MAW down at Charleston, I bet you could get a bunch of pictures!(BTW...happy new year)Eric AND
January 10, 200422 yr Hi Eric,Happy New Year also to you !I'd never seen a C17 until Bush came to YSCB recently. That floating monstrosity looked just like an oversized WW1 barrage balloon sailing serenely on by, very quietly, just a few hundred feet up on the ILS. Not at all like the C5.Owen really has done a superb job on the new C17. There's an Abrams inside it that exits through the rear but I haven't figured out what animation command Owen's assigned it to it LOL !We haven't written it off just yet, it's just a question of priorities. Drop us a line soon.Best,Stevehttp://www.fsd-international.com/temp/c17/c1703avsim.jpghttp://www.fsd-international.com/temp/c17/c1704avsim.jpghttp://www.fsd-international.com/team/Steve_signature.gif
January 10, 200422 yr Thanks for the comments, Steve. The tank itself does not roll out of the aircraft (though that would be a great feature, if possible), but is merely visible when the rear door opens. As Steve has mentioned, there are many improvements over the original FSDS version. I would love to see it see the light of day again.Best,Owen
January 10, 200422 yr Actually John Murchison has done some very interesting things with his AIS fleet. Lots of external loaders, pylons etc associated with the airplane. Mebbe this would be a chance to use some similar idea.In any case, I have seen these quite often and I suspect I could help with getting the pics you might need on the interiors if needed. the US Secret Service uses one of these planes to haul the presidents specially protected limosine as well as secret service Range rovers etc. used to be a C-5 that did that job.eric AND
January 10, 200422 yr Owen, there is a guy named Jetninja who works on these a Charleston who I bet can get you the pics you need.I'll send him this way to get in touch. That thing is a thing of beauty :-jumpy
January 10, 200422 yr I already know Jet, in fact he was critical in getting me info for the first version. He in fact works at the Long Beach factory where they are produced.Best,Owen
January 10, 200422 yr I would love to have that C17, and I must admit that it looks fantastic. I would quite hapily have it without a cockpit and sound file as I could find one around the net. but I would also love to have a C5 Galaxy as well, especialy if it look as good as those shots I have just seen of Owen's C17.Steve.PS those would be well worth paying for.
January 11, 200422 yr Awesome.. thank you for the replies. I am a C17 Crew Chief at McChord, and if its pictures you need, of anything, I can get them within 24 hours, as I live and breathe this jet everyday.Any remote possibility I could purchase the version you have right now?!? From those pictures it looks excellent!!
January 11, 200422 yr OMG! those pics do look amazing!!!! fantastic work Owen! I have to have the VC though, would love to walk around in side that thing on preflight!Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://mysite.verizon.net/res052cd/mybannercva1.jpgCalVirAir International VACougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviation[link:www.cgrmthelos.com]Cougar Mountain Helicopters Best, Michael KDFW
January 11, 200422 yr Well, I too of course would love to see it to completion. I sent Owen (whom I've known the past 3+ years since he was making his first model back in the FS2000 days!) lots of pics and drawings of most of the pit, loadmaster station, interior, and much more around last fall. (over the years dozens of scans!) Unfortunately he told me shortly there after that he and Steve were forgoing freeware releases forevermore. (due to some bozo's stealing stuff as I understand)Now I never condone such things and a persons work should be protected, but the reality of the net is just that. There are all types out there. I hate see the true lovers of such an aviation hero not get a quality version of her that matches the best of the dozens of Commercial Jets we see everyday in this Sim. You saddly have to be very thick skinned in this net world. People are People....I have been approached by another group that has offered to take a stab at creating a C-17. They are a multi manned group with a history. They are still working on some packages, so this would not be touched for a while.Owen, you have a massive head start. I would so love to see you complete her. You last told me you would not. If you are changing your mind, please let me know. Your work in the past has done a great service to the aircraft and sim population that so much likes her.In fact, if you are changing your mind, I have one aircraft in mind you could dedicate it too. Early in December one of ours was departing Bagdad airport...regular crew (Female first Officer I think) with maybe a dozen soldiers onboard. In the begining climb-out, they took a Sam hit into one of the engines. (dont remember which one..) They lost many primary systems, but all the backup worked fine. The Pilots MFD's were down, but the steam gauges were working. Fire ext were not able to put it out on the first or second try, they followed the book and made a safe turn around and landed ok. It was a scary time for them, but they performed awesome, and the piot said the aircraft handled like nothing had happened. The engine was changed a few days later and it departed normally. This story for what ever reason was kept out of the press, but it was recentlly written about in the Air Force Mag, and since on our company news sites. I expect the press will see it soon. Its under investigation also, since the missle warning system seemed to not work as planned possibly. If your interested, I can get you the story and info. You have my email.I know you all know some of the C-17's history, but for those that dont. She is the work horse. She holds many world records. Collier Trophy. Our Team has won the Malcom Baldridge award more then once! The California Business award. She has provided relief work all over the globe to every nation imaginable. In person she is amazing to see fly....at the Edward AFB open house...she's the only big bird to bring the crown to their feet with a roar....when she lands and then stops 2000' earlier then thier used to seeing! (in 1500')Cheers!
