September 24, 201114 yr Wow many people have already said how amazing REX is and I have to agree 100%!! It is one of the best add ons that I have purchased for FS9. One little problem does bother me about it however. I use PFE as my main ATC and sometimes they direct me to the wrong runway because it doesn't refresh weather as often as the default weather engine. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? If yes, please tell me :)..but REX is amazing and I love it! Sincerely, Jason Janusz Wozniak
September 25, 201114 yr Hi I see we've already persuaded the original poster to purchase so these are just a few comments to throw into the soup. I bought REX for FS9 after having had REPro (great in its time) and Flight Environment. Timest is a genius without a doubt and one of the few visionaries who realises that there is still a lot of life left in the FS9 user base. Even if I bought the most hyped up, bleeding edge, i5 2600k, that could do away with a fully loaded FSX for breakfast, I would still want to use FS9. There are things you simply still cannot get in FSX. (anyone wants a list?....) - The huge upside is its coordinated sky/water environment which works well in most circumstances, for the first time ever in FS9. I do prefer to add an overcast texture I had from Flight Environment to the default overcast texture however. - Clouds and skies are themselves a real trip esp. the OD textures and of course really zing with ASE.- One of the other posters noted that it also transforms GE Pro textures - it does. Tibet and Nepal - non existent for example in FS9 default, along with some freeware19m mesh and freeware add on airports and Navaids, is completely transformed and looks better in general than FSX. Try flying VNKT ZULS with that combo in a Capt 757 Air China of course. I can do it in FSX too of course, but prefer FS9.- Zinnertek Water (which I also bought), looks really good on a nice day, but does not coordinate quite as well as with Rex's own textures. I still need to add the old FE overcast texture for my preference.- I never use REX weather - ASE is superior in every aspect imho - guess this would make a difference to those flying on VATSIM. Hope this helps, Ray
October 2, 201114 yr Author Apologies to dig up this original post of mine but I still need help in clarifying some questions I have before purchasing this. Excuse me if I sound a bit thick at times but I just need some more help please. Firstly, can someone explain to me exactly what a 'weather engine' does. What I think it does in my opinion, and I may be wrong here, is it generates and downloads real world weather. Or does it do more than that? The thing is, in FS9 you can fly in real world weather anyway as it collects the info from Jeppersen, so surely FS9 already has a weather engine built into it? Or not? Also, I came across a copy of 'Flight Environment' that I bought a few years ago that I forgot I had. For some reason I never installed it and was wondering if maybe I should but I don't know if it is as good as REX as in weather conditions, probably not I reckon. What I don't want to do is to have to set up my weather conditions beforehand if I can help it, I just want to be able to fly in the real world conditions and have the same results on my flight sim. I also keep thinking if maybe I should get Active Sky as well, but that's another story...! The bottom line is this; if you were me should I just install my copy of Flight Environment and be content with the results or go out full force and get REX? I have a feeling what the majority of the answers will be! Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Packard Bell imedia S3210. AMD Athlon II X 3 425 Processor 2.70 GHz. 3 GB RAM. External hard drive 1TB. FS9.1, Ground Environment, Ultimate Terrain Europe, REX, Zinertek's Ultimate Water Advanced & Ultimate Night Environment 2010, WOAI, MAIW, AES, ODG Project.

I have a feeling what the majority of the answers will be! There are some textures in FE that you might like and can still be used with REX per post #32 above... There is no reason why you can't use real world weather with REX textures - see my post in the HiFi forum where I comment on how to do so in the thread "ASE and REX". With regard to weather, the FS built-in "real world" weather feed is of marginal utility and the weather engine is primative. All weather engines get weather from reporting stations all over the world; consider the spaces in between stations - a good engine is able to perform interpolation in a useful way to fill these voids, synchronize reporting times, smooth wind and pressure changes, disgard bad data and so on... REX's engine is not one of the best, but probably better than the FS built-in. At the moment, ASE is probably the best available. The bottom line is that you can make FS anything that you want it to be - what that is, is up to you, your pocketbook, and your desire and willingness to try various combinations of things until you get something you like. October 2, 201114 yr Author OK thanks for that, I think I will now go ahead and get it then download the overdrive version from the REX website. Does anyone know where the best place to get it from, baring in mind I live in the UK? The only place I can see is from Simmarket which is fine, but I was trying to see if I can find it cheaper anywhere else before I buy it... Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Packard Bell imedia S3210. I got mine from Simmarket - it's one of the few places that give you unlimited downloads on all purchases; I've found that very useful over the years. REX is also a huge download (nearly 8 Gb) and the Simmarket servers are very stable. DJ

If there is a similarity between the real world weather in FS9 and the real world, it is purely coincidental! :-) With a dedicated weather program like ASE or ASV 6.5 or the built in one for REX, you will get the real thing. FS9 alone will never even come close. With REX and real weather you are in for a treat! But remember what I've yakked on about earlier in this thread - you also want to get the registered version of FSUIPC as soon as you have a few extra quid. You will be amazed at the transformation...
October 3, 201114 yr Author Thank you for all your invaluable input into this topic kiwiflyer45, your comments have been most valuable and I will certainly take on board your comments and suggestions as well as everyone else's. What has surprised me though is when you mentioned that FS9's real world weather and the real world itself is nothing alike, and if it is then it is coincidental, I honestly thought that FS9 was downloading real world weather from Jeppersen and loading it into FS9. By your comments then this is not the case, or at least it's not on an accurate scale. That has made my mind up even more to purchase REX then maybe explore the registered version of FSUIPC as you keep suggesting. Thanks again! Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Packard Bell imedia S3210. FS does use the Jep server (or at least a server that takes it's feed from Jep) but the data is not refreshed as often or as accurately as the servers used by ASE, for example. DJ
