September 24, 201114 yr Aircraft here in Nz tend to use strobe lights to signify cleared onto the active runway, then landing lights on when they get the actual take off clearance. I've never seen them use runway turnoff lights except when actually turning off a runway :) Flight Sim New Zealand- Flight Sim Blog

I've never seen them use runway turnoff lights except when actually turning off a runway :)Yes, this is SOP for many. It also serves as a "memory backup" for the flight crew. Landing light not on - ah, we're not yet cleared. Similar methods might work for landing (e. g. switch on something insignificant like taxi light, as a reminder for landing clearance received). On your second note, can you actually distinguish between fixed landing lights and turnoff lights from a distance?? I've never paid attention to it, but since they are basically in the same spot, I would think it might be hard. Will check it out next time I see one.
September 24, 201114 yr Yeah at night you can clearly see the area that they light up on the ground and the runway signs etc being lit up. Flight Sim New Zealand- Flight Sim Blog
