IFR Arrival tips.

Hi all,I'm a new user to VOX ATC but not a new user to other ATC programs such as PFE etc. So far it all seems to be working very well including the speech recognition and sid and star selection works when the flight play is correctly made. However I only fly IFR and mostly fly the PMDG 737NGX. It all works well but I find the approach setup can be a bit fiddly. When i'm on the ground at my destination airport the ATIS works fine, it gives me the wind and runway and ground will also assign my SID if its relevant. I take off, fly the SID and get to cruise altitude with no problems from ATC. However this is where things get a little wild. I can't pull up the destination ATIS on radio 2 or even on Radio 1, I first though I'm too far out of range so my next flight I tuned radio 1 into ATIS whilst on final approach and still got nothing. It makes it hard to set up the FMC for descent when I'm only guessing the runway I will be assigned. Single runway airports are fine but airports with parallel runways like EGKK and EGLL cause me a problem. ATC will assign me the STAR but it's often a little late and I should already be on that star rather than fiddling with the FMC setting up the STAR and runway as fast as possible so I don't mess up the descent profile. The second issue I find is that the ATC will direct me off the star, sometimes very early. I'm given the star and the approach by ATC and then 30 seconds later ATC starts vectoring me to the ILS. Is that how it's done in real life? or am I supposed to follow the STAR all the way to the ILS and then ATC is supposed to take over?Any tips on ways around these small problems? I thought I would ask here as there must be others flying the NGX with VOX.Any tips would be most appreciated.

it is not an issue with Vox running on the NGX, I fly the NGX also most of the times.I can't answer your 1st question, but I minimize the problem by pausing the FSX, filling in the details in the CDU, then continue my flight.for me personally it isn't really an issue as ATC (vox) would tell you pretty much at your T/D to start descending, leaving you lot's of head room for a nice.slow descend. only when you reach the last navaid or fix usually the STAR would be assigned to you and that is the point where I pause my FSX for 2min' and configure my CDU.yeah, what can you do you need to pause as you a one pilot doing the job of two.as to your second question, I asked that in the past and I was told that ATC do usually in real life vector you out of the STAR or even within the STAR,however I noticed that it does it to me all the Time.the workaround which works perfectly is when I get assigned with the STAR , I start flying the STAR procedure, as soon as I get vectored (usually it happens when you are past to Approach, etc).I just hit the menu "0" and pick the option "request FULL ILS RW xx" (RW xx = the RW I was initially assigned to).the ATC would then tell you "fly Published approach"The "published" approach is the actual approach procedure as published on charts. An ILS approach is usually a straight line - in line with the runway centerline (and the localizer) - but may contain "transitions" that curve in from the side. (From what I've seen, an VoxATC approach is the approach itself sans transition, so no need to concern that). So by telling Approach that you want to fly "The Full ILS" what you're saying is, "I know where I need to go and the altitude restrictions I need to observe because I have this chart in my view. Let me fly." Angel.gifyou would be told to report at certain points along the STAR, once you report your 4DME location (4nm from the RW), you would be passed to tower for landing.4DME you need to look at your charts.here is a great link that talks all about it with VoxATC & SID/STAR stuff.check it out, it might be a huge help for you.http://forum.avsim.n...sids-and-stars/http://forum.avsim.n...me-sid-or-star/

Dean, Like you I'm a convert from PFE. I've been using VOX for about 4 months now and I'm addicted. I find that most times it gets me right where I need to be along with SIDS/STARS. The atis thing can be a problem. I use my iPad with a weather app so I can pull the weather for any airport in the world. Joel has given you an in depth answer on the second part. The longer you fly with VOX the more you'll like it.

If you don't want vectors and descent instructions, as soon as you have tuned the radio to the airport Approach, press 0 to display the options menu and select a Full ILS. Then you will be prompted to make contact and request the approach all in one call.
