APPROACH VREF NOT SELECTED

Featured Replies

Hi there.EVERY time I'm flying an approach I will get the APPROACH VREF NOT SELECTED (or something similar). What does this mean? If I'm doing an ILS landing, it always comes perfect with no issues and with smoothness. I saw on the FCOM 1 page 131 and it says to enter VREF on the approach REF page. How do I do that?

It means you haven't selected your landing flaps and speed on the FMC APPROACH REF page. If you press INIT REF during your descent, it'll bring up the page. Press the LSK on the right next to the flap and VREF setting you want (usually 30 or 40 on the NG). You can manually modify the entries too, but for most purposes the calculated ones are fine. This is covered in the tutorial btw...

CTRL + FWhile I applaud you for actually looking at the FCOM, that warning is pretty basic. The PDFs are searchable...

So it's similar to the INIT REF page when you're on the ground that calculates your V1, VR, and V2 speeds, correct? Except that you have to choose between 15, 30, and 40? Will VNAV continue to manage my speed as I descend, or will I have to manually change it in the MCP like I've been doing for quite some time after the A/P switches completely to APP mode? Doesn't it turn off?

And? I have my Flight Director on. (both)

Yes, it's the approach/landing equivalent of the TAKEOFF REF page. VNAV will manage your speed as long as you are actually in VNAV (it slows to the maneuvering speeds once you start putting flaps out with the goal of being at the Flaps 15 maneuvering speed at the G/S intercept point - once G/S mode engages on the ILS after you've pressed APP, the speed window opens and you are in full control of it. It's this way on any Boeing-designed aircraft. The MD-11 and the Airbus systems are different and it still manages the speed in the approach modes.Seriously, do the tutorial flight though, all of this stuff is explained in detail there.

I did do the tutorial flight, but I must have skipped the Approach Ref page section. I reread it and it makes more sense. It says that once you select one of the 3 flap choices you must then click on LSK (forgot the number) in order to "apply" it.Thanks
