February 10, 200422 yr Hi All,First of all, let me say that all of the scenery I've installed from ISD (FS2002 and FS2004) has been excellent! They continue to get even better in their scenery efforts for Italy. I've installed Milano VFR and well as Linate and they are truly works of art. Malpensa as well. Also, framerate friendly on my old system. Many thanks to the folks at the ISD Project.I downloaded their Venice scenery from Avsim (isdproject_-_lipz_&_lipv_2003.zip) and I'm having problems installing it. I sent an e-mail to their site using the address they supplied but it was returned as undelieverable, so that's why I'm posting this message here. Each time I try to run the install program I'm getting the following message from my Norton Anti-virus program. "Malicious script detected - file MSIEXEC.EXE"Norton recommends that I shouldn't run the script so I cancelled it as they recommended. I realize that the install program tells us to shut down all other programs while installing, but I've let Norton run many times in the past when installing other programs with no problems. In all the years I've installed programs I've never gotten the "Malicious Script" error message. I also installed ISD's Milano VFR and Linate sceneries (while Norton was running) and didn't get any error message.I'd appreciate any help you folks can offer. Thanks in advance.Howard (PIII, 1 gig, 512 mb ram, GeForce 4 Ti4200 64mb, WinMe)
February 10, 200422 yr I have used their sceneries in the past as well, so not saying anything bad about them, But this is odd. I would be concerned as well.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://mysite.verizon.net/res052cd/mybannercva1.jpgCalVirAir International VACougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviation[link:www.cgrmthelos.com]Cougar Mountain Helicopters Best, Michael KDFW
February 10, 200422 yr A lot of auto install programs work better with Norton auto protect off. This is probably why. Norton is tripping up the install. Try it.Lee Lee H i9 13900KF 64GB Ram 24GB RTX 4090
February 10, 200422 yr Author Hello,I had the same message from AV Norton, I did allow the script to run once (1) and the installation was ok. February 10, 200422 yr Thanks for the replys folks....I just received a message from Alessandro Simonato (ISDproject member), who said they are aware of the Norton problem and he assured me there is no problem with installing the scenery.I'd be interested in hearing from others who may have gotten the same script message while installing Venice.Howard
February 11, 200422 yr I took their advice and disabled Norton for the short time when I was installing the scenery. It came up fine, and there were no problems with the machine afterwards. And yes, these are really nice sceneries! The ISD team deserves a hearty cheer from all of us. I've personally been drinking more Chianti since I downloaded the scenery. It's been a great place to play with the Eaglesoft Beechjets, too.
February 11, 200422 yr HiI've experienced the same problem - got suspicious and decided to cancel the whole thing.I'm happy to hear that ISD is aware of the problem and will definitely give it a go.Having said that, I must say that the ISD sceneries are great - their recently released Milano VFR ( together with Malpensa and Linate airports) is absolutely STUNNING !I am totally convinced that satellite-photo based scenery with autogen and hi-quality GMAX macros is the ONLY way to go when it comes to scenery modelling !Commercial designers have obviously recognized that trend - almost all the commercial scenery add-ons are based on satellite photography ( UK VFR, Mega-Scenery USA, Switzerland, France VFR, etc...)The satellite picture (with proper resolution and adequate coloring)produces excellent effects at altitudes above 2000 feet, the autogen and macros take over under that altitude.I love it !
February 11, 200422 yr What happens when you do a virus scan of the set of files from the developer before trying to install? The fact that you're getting a message when attempting to install a particular program does not necessarily mean _that_ particular program contains the problem; it might be merely a catalyst or symptom of a problem; but not the source of the problem itself. You state that you successfully installed other files from the same developer, but you don't say _when_ said install was completed. In other words, con-currently with the problematic one, after, or before? Can you install any other self-executing program from other than this particular developer without incidence?Your troubles may be stemming from something altogether different from what you may suspect.
February 11, 200422 yr Satellite/aerial photos is definitely the way to go. Unfortunately, FS2004 is limited to 4.8 meters/pixel for the scenery textures. There are some ways to work around this limitation, but nothing that works 100% perfect. Another problem with photo sceneries is blurries. The archaic FS2004 scenery engine can't keep up and doesn't bring the textures into focus fast enough. This must be changed in FS2006. If you experience blurries, or want higher resolution scenery in FS2006, I suggest you contact Microsoft at [email protected] and tell them about it. -
February 11, 200422 yr No it's definitely in their install file, Barney.Although I am a champion of freeware, and love ISD's work, I am famous for stating that these self-installers that give no option drive me MAD. For me, this one:1. Came up with the warning. When I said NO, it froze the install.2. Started again, said YES, told me I was already installing and should resume. But I had closed the other installer and could not. God knows what was in and what was out.3. Rebooted totally. Reinstalled saying YES (with trepidation) to the script based on what people have said above. Still stalled. Closed Norton, still gave the error message. After hitting the #### often enough it finally went in.However, it was not configured properly and the README did not tally with how it had been installed. I still don't know if it overwrote any default files.I had similar problems with the Venice Scenery which wrote to FS2002 even though I told it not to; Milan installed in the main FS folder, not to ADDON SCENERY or SCENERY; need I go on. Either I'm thick or I'm right about this: they are a pain. It's more trouble trying to find out where everything went after an install than manually installing in the first place. And if you want a really wacky installer, try the Antilles stuff this week. Grrrrr ... only after you have installed, do they tell you what you should have done to your set up first.I hate 'em, hate 'em, HATE 'EM. Did I tell you I hate self-installers, by the way?Mark "Dark Moment" BeaumontP.S. They probably work for people who just do what they're told. But when your SCENERY.CFG files are carefully crafted, it's not nice to have messages from ISD like "Your SCENERY.CFG" is damaged". It wasn't ..... but well could be now. Thank God I backed it up first.http://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
February 11, 200422 yr Hi Barney,Your questions are good and to the point - thanks.virus scan of developers files before install indicate no virus foundVirus scan of my entire system after installation indicate no viruses found.Other files from the developer were installed before and after the Venice files - no problems encountered. The developer states on their web site (forum) that they are aware of the problem with Norton during installation of Venice but they are confident there are no virus problems with the install (see their forum for more info).Have a good one.Howard
February 11, 200422 yr Hi Mark,I agree concering auto install scenery installers. I also have specially designed my scenery.cfg (files) as I load lots of scenery and find it best to have a different scenery.cfg for certain areas. Example: scenery Europe scenery Alaska BC Washington Scenery USA etc. Then I put my add on scenery into separate folders which are named the same my scenery XXX.cfg files. Then when I want to fly in Alaska I just copy the corresponding .cfg file and rename it scenery.cfg and off I go.In any case, since I've had so many problems with auto install programs, I always tell the auto install program to install in a folder I call /scenery work. Then I manually move the files/folders where needed.Howard
February 11, 200422 yr Howard,Thanks for taking the time to respond. Although this doesn't solve your problem, it hopefully makes others aware that there can be other reasons for error dialogue boxes.I also think "Dark Moment" above makes valid argument against the self-installers and I sympathize. I also am all for unzipping these things and placing the files at my discretion and according to my structure. Assuming that this could be done with your particular scenery discussed in the opening, this method might be a work-around. It is also recognized, however that not _all_ of these types of files are so designed and in fact, must be self-executed. When I encounter these, I very often shy away from such installation and weigh the potential for mischief with 'how badly do I want this'?.That being said though, after having previous experience and success with this developer, it is frustrating and nerve-wracking to have this kind of thing happen. Hopefully they will have ironed this problem out and others will be able to avoid what you went through.
