Heading Discrepancy

Featured Replies

Good afternoon from Oklahoma City,I am curious if others experience a discrepancy between the heading selected on the MCP and the MAG TRK of the aircraft. It seems when I select a heading and subsequenty HDG SEL, e.g., 190, the aircraft will turn to a heading whch is often 5-10 degrees different, e.g., 182 or 197. This offset is quite annoying.I searched the forums for a potential solution- but did not come across any solutions.I'm certain the issue has to do with magnetic variation over time. Does anybody have a solution or fix to the issue? Thanks for your time!JW

Are you sure this is an issue? To me, (without more information) this sounds like a problem in understanding the difference between heading and track (heading up or track up on the ND is an option in the NGX)the heading is the way the nose of the aircraft is pointed. The track is the direction over the earths surface the aircraft moves.Generally, if there is no wind, heading and track will be the same.If there is, the track will be different from the heading, caused by the wind blowing the aircraft sideways. If this is not the problem you mean, well, somebody else will have to step in...

Jeffrey-Lars is on the right track in his answer to you.If you look closely, you will find that the heading display on your Primary Flight Display is set to magnetic heading, and the Nav Display is set to magnetic TRACK.It is done this way because when hand flying the airplane, you will be using the heading display on your PFD in order to maintain assigned heading. When navigating off the ND, you are most interested in your ground track, as the ND has the track between navigation points displayed. If you look closely, you will find that your PFD also has a ground track line that matches the track displayed on your ND- and it is very useful for matching your ground track to an ILS approach when hand flying the airplane in wind...

Thanks for your response gents, I appreciate your time.Lars is indeed on the right TRACK- I was not understanding the difference between HDG and MAG TRK. Robert, until this moment I always used the ND for heading- even when hand flying. I love learning new stuff!JW

However, I do not hold a type rating on the NG and subsequently have lots of questions (like most users). It is really great to have such a great group of simulator enthusiasts in the PMDG forums- who are very willing to answer the questions of those like me who are humble enough to ask. Your nonsensical feedback is neither necessary nor appreciated. If you do not have positive and productive feedback please feel free to refrain from sharing your thoughts.JW
Jeffrey, I gave a smile/wink on my reply as a ribbing, not to be offensive. Sorry about that, and ask away.

Matt,You caught me shorty after editing my statement. I realized that your comment was not intentionally disruptive. No offense taken- I reacted too quickly.JW

HeyI have a similar problem when hand flying using the FD if you select a heading on the mcp and follow the FD you will always turn through the heading you have selected. But if you roll the aircraft early the FD will follow your early roll out onto the heading.Any ideas ??Chris Finlay
