March 2, 201214 yr Commercial Member To be more specific, fail operational autoland can still land the airplane in the event of a single failure within the autoland system. Fail passive can't.Fail operational is closer to the type of autoland that's in the 757, 767, 777, 744, and 787 - it has a rudder control servo for guidance in kicking out a crosswind crab and for centerline tracking during the the landing rollout. You won't see "LAND 3" or "LAND 2" messages with fail passive, it doesn't have those levels of redundancy.
