Night lighting - or lack there of.

Featured Replies

Well I have to say I'm ok with daytime. I did notice though that shadows are darker but nothing that bothers me too much. I think it's a minor detail and my eyes are easily getting used to it that I end up forgetting about it.

I tried these settings at dawn with squalls and it looks superb. Maybe it's just me but, lights and shadows feel more 'natural'. I guess it's up to the personal opinion of the player whether or not it looks weird at daytime. But as I said, I don't mind. I like the feeling of playing at dusk and everything getting darker as the minutes go by until it becomes completely black at night.

Glad you've got great looking nights, but I do wonder how things look in daytime now... :wink:

Either Flight's days are too drab, or it's nights are too bright. I don't see a happy medium for monitor adjustments on that.

Ok. I have been flying for some days now using the low gamma levels and I have to say I don't think it's good enough because the terrain, even though it's darker, still looks too bright and daytime looks, as RoboRay said, "drab". Go back to Display Color Calibration in the windows 7 control panel and set gamma to default levels.

So I found another way. I've been searching the forums and found an add-on called ENB Series Mod for FSX which allows you to make a few graphic modifications to the game such as lighting, bloom, etc. I installed it and it works for Flight. I suggest anyone to try this out because it looks very neat. Follow Jeroen's lifesaving post (thanks!) here: http://forum.avsim.n...nb-series-mod/. Seriously, this was very hard to find/understand and after reading that post it all became clear and simple. Just download and paste the .dll and .ini files here:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\microsoft flight

I suggest you tweak DarkeningAmountNight=42 for a realistic night effect. If it doesn't work suddenly, minimize and go back until it stays. Usually 2 or 3 times and sometimes only once. Here are a few screenshots:

ENB Disabled at night. I guess no comments are necessary.

Now with ENB. You can adjust darkness levels to your likes.

In my opinion this makes night look very realistic, as it should be. The best thing of ENB is that you can make your own modifications and share the .ini file for others to try! Thoughts?

Huh...? How's that possible...! I thought ENB didn't work with Flight? After reading your post I gave it another try: didn't work... until I minimized the game and went back again, as you said.

Interesting...! For the night indeed, but also for the bloom... ENB was the thing that sort of brought light into FSX. I will experiment a little and see if it's a keeper for Flight!

Awsome! Glad it's working for you now Jeroen :smile: I have to say I'm having a lot of fun now with ENB. It's a nice touch for Flight. Let me know how it goes!

Yes, it's nice that it's working but I am a bit in doubt if it's a keeper for me. I tried various settings (more and less bloom, darker and normal days) and I can't decide if I really like it (as I did back then for FSX). Some bloom is nice but you lose a bit of detail here and there. The darkening effect for day is nice for some circumstances but maybe not always.

For those who want to give it a try: you can turn the effect on and off with Shift-F12 for easy comparison and you can edit the ini on the fly: edit it, save it, alt-tab back to Flight and the new settings will be in effect immediately.

I noticed that the settings I posted back then are different from what I would use now... Funny how ones taste changes over time. :wink:

Anyway, I think a lot of people will be happy with this 'new addon' for Flight!

EDIT

I fooled around with the ini and in the end settled for these settings: funnily enough I only tweaked the settings I was suggesting in my old post! :wink: However, the settings are more moderate:

BloomMaxLimit=50 (default 100)

DarkeningAmountDay=10 (default 40)

DarkeningAmountNight=25 (default -30)

ColorSaturationDay=1 (default 0)

That will give you a nice impression of what's possible without overdoing it, I think.

Jeroen, how about posting a new link to the file?

This is weird. I've seen a lot of ENB comparison pics and in every case I preferred the default to the ENB enabled. I haven't seen ENB in action yet, so I'll reserve judgement.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I will create a new topic about it! This might be interesting for quite a few Flight users. Even though I doubt if I will use it myself. :wink:

Do the effects require you to be in full screen mode? I always run windowed.

Thanks, I'll follow with your settings! I'll continue experimenting with other settings to see if there's a way to increase brightness of aircraft, runway and city lights. I want to find a way that it looks like in this video where ENB is enabled in FS9.

I agree with you. Flight's default is perfect for me except during the night. In my computer it's way too bright and feels wrong. Just can't stand it! Makes me wonder why we need streetlights. My idea would be to only enable ENB with Shift+F12 when it gets dark. Otherwise, i would leave it off.
