March 8, 201214 yr I only ever had one problem with an AV program, it took two days for my PC guru to sort it out. Some of my registries had gone to cock, and yes, you guessed, it was Norton. I immediately wiped Norton from my drive and have never had a problem since. March 8, 201214 yr Commercial Member I dunno, just haven't ever trusted microslop to keep their own code safe, especially after not booting up for a couple of days and need 18Mb of critical updates from them.Microsoft bought the company that actually develops MSSE back in the last decade - it's not the team that makes Windows or anything, but I suspect that having access to the actual Windows source code and the kernel developers gives them a leg up in this. MSSE has scored extremely well in independent testing ever since it's release.http://en.wikipedia....rity_EssentialsNo software is exploit/hack proof - I think the fact that Win7 always has critical updates every week or so is more a function of the fact that it's ubiquitous in its marketshare than anything else. I've been completely happy with it since it was released. If Macs or Linux or anything else had 90% marketshare they'd probably have a billion exploits and updates to patch them happening too. Apple gets away with acting like they don't ever have problems in their marketing but in reality if you own a Mac you know that there's Software Update all the time, often with large multi-hundred MB OS patches that have a ton of security fixes burried in them. I'd rather know what the problems are/were than have the company try to hide them so that they can run a marketing campaign personally... March 8, 201214 yr From Win95 I never used an AV program that protect my system.I only run online scans at about months intervals, and dl and install one free AV (normally a different one each time) to check my system.Except for the XP famous Sasser threat, I never had problems without AV.My system is always connected to the net.AV are a waste of system resource and a business for who makes the AV programs (most of the time, the same who makes the viruses). No money to them.Just learn to use the PC and identify what is dangerous (downloaded files, web pages, mails, and so on), if you learn how to use, the risk is less than having an antivirus. To be completely protect you need to buy all AV in the market, and also in this way, there is also the possibility to miss something, so, as AV does not protect, I don't use them.I locked my MSE from the windows updates so it will not be installed. My system is at risk? Maybe, but my hystory and the hystory of my friends pc with an active AV showed that I'm protected more than their systems.A friend of mine got the net locked by a virus and he was running an AV program fully updated... He paid for that AV, the result? To repair his system I downloaded 4 free AV before finding one who removed the virus. No way to get protected, don't waste your money... Regards Andrea Daviero
