To buy or not to buy. XPlane 10

Is it fair to compare FSX to X-plane v5 ?Why are we comparing X-plane v10 to FSX ?
Easy question .... they are the latest version offer by laminar and MS.
Ok, let's compare it to Flight. Then again, let's not. Flight has too much missing. No AI. No ATC. Hawaii only.... :(
In my opinion, this whole concept about dedicating ones heart to one sim........................is kind of being short sided. I always like to see whats over the next hill, or what's around the corner. Considering I've actually flown around the Hawaiian Islands, commercial & GA; I might just prefer the Flight version over X-Plane, just because of the content. As addons for XP10 increase, the reverse could easily be true. Sometimes a small area that's dressed up to create an illusion of being there, is preferable over a whole world with limited features.Looks like Flight is going to Alaska next. This could be worthwhile, again considering the content. We've already seen some XP10 Alaska pics, and they look interesting too. I know what I'll be doing, as long as I have any interest in flight sims....................and it won't be limiting myself to one variety.L.Adamson

Larry,I agree with what yout say about having multiple sims. There is no reason one cant use them all. After all they all have the good and bad points. I have FS9, FSX, XP10, Flight, Rise of Flight ,DCS A10 and IL2 COD all installed on my machine right now. I still use all of them from time to time and for different reasons. Right now XP10 is the sim Im spending the most time with and Im really enjoying it. ROF is great for multiplayer air combat and Im finding Flight a fun way to spend time with my son who is not crazy about flightsims, but he likes Flight and its a way for use to spend time together and I get to tech him about flying and planes. He's only 6 but im trying to get him intrested in Aviation and Flight is the only games thats been able to peak his interest so far.I still have tons of FSX addons and im building up my XP addon collection daily. I think ive spent cover $150 on XP addons in the last month and have plans to buy more. That may be another reason why we tend to pick one sim over the other..$money$. it just gets too expensive to support all these sims with the latest addons. Not to get off topic, but I remember both you and geoffa back in the day when Sierra Pro Pilot came out. We were some of the few at the time who preffered it over FS98. At the time and we took a lot of flack for it on forums. I dont remember what forum we were on back then, was it compuserve? Anyhow it just came to me when I recognized yout name. Good to see your still involved in Flightsims.Rob

I was really REALLY sad when Pro Pilot didn't make it. I won a real life vfr contest in Grand Prairie Tx. by flying the course in Pro Pilot the day before actually flying it. The prize was 100 gallon on 100LL gasoline. LOL. The course was from Grand Prairie to I bleieve San Sabine Tx and back dead reckoning only, with a Howell's Aviation flight instructor overseeing.

Flying is the 2nd greatest thrill known to man

The 1st is landing.

It was here at Avsim. And then some at Flightsim.com..........which could get out of hand, once and a while. I actually had a Pro-Pilot party at my house (someone talked me into it), and a few people from across the US attended. We buried the program (Pro-Pilot 3 beta) with a marker in my back yard. A shed now covers the spot.

Wow, I thought it was on another forum, I guess avsim's been around longer than I thought. I guess it just seems like such a long time ago. That was when I was on wife #1. Im on #3 now! LOL.Yes, its a pitty Pro pilot didnt make it. It really was a head of its time.Rob

X-plane 10 has accurate runways, roads and elevations around the world with "plausible" scenery. Don't expect much in the way of Landmarks or airport buildings outside of Seattle and select European cities in X-plane 10 default scenery.Fortunately X-plane has an active scenery development community, with lots of freeware developers and several commercial scenery developers like Aerosoft and my personal favorite, Tom Curtis. After playing around with Microsoft Flight, I REALLY appreciate having the whole world available with runways and NavAids for the world's airports, and open architecture that allows outside developers to create detailed scenery where needed.X-plane "landmark" scenery is not on par with FSX, but at least it's NOT 5 year old software with no hope of improvement. I personally have committed to X-plane 10 because I feel it's the Flight Sim for the next 5 years, not the last 5. But this may require a little patience in these early days.
I agree, Its a sad time for me cos Ive flown Microsoft FS since 1981, but ive been waiting for XPlane to get as good as what XP10 is. Its time to focus totally on it now and leave Microsoft to do something special to entice me back, but I cant see that happening.
Not exactly. With active 3rd party development, FSX still seems to improve, just about every day. The same goes for XP.
Its tough to call cos ones a full on sim and the others an eye candy generator, but after trying MS Flight and then buying XP10 and VFR terrain im glad to turn my back on all those MSFS annoyances and take on something better that just needs a bit of patience with the 3D, otherwise ive got a sim built for eating up the terrain and knowing im getting the best flight physics on the planet.
something better that just needs a bit of patience with the 3D
+1I'm waiting using OSM2XP sceneries and trying to improve all the details in OpenStreetMap.http://forum.avsim.net/topic/363752-vfr-test-flight/http://forum.avsim.net/topic/364546-vfr-to-nancy/http://forum.avsim.net/topic/365689-t-28-trojan-in-france/
Is it a time consuming painful process to achieve that or is it easy when you know how? I got lost in the many tools and converters in FSX and lost interest, I hope that doesnt happen again with XP.
