Is reinstalling neccessary when OC'ing the CPU?

Featured Replies

As above... do you have to reinstall FSX when OC'ing a cpu? Or is it seperate?I'm considering OC'ing my i5 2500k sometime in the future but I'd prefer to not reinstall...

Not at all, I sure would never go through that pain from just overclocking my cpu, or heck even putting a new cpu in.The big thing is to read up on overclocking, take your time and be patient, change one thing at a time and stress test for stablity in between. The biggest thing with overclocking - keep the core cpu temps reasonable, and keep the system stable.Oh, and a good cpu cooler, don't even think about overclocking with the stock cooler that comes with those cpu's.When you decide to give it a go, do some research and ask questions - it can be very rewarding. I have been overclocking for many years, my current system is running at 4.1 ghz with a GTX 460, and they match up very well. Your cpu is ideal for overclocking. FSX really starts to shine somewhat when you reach 4 ghz and beyond.

You are most welcome, when and if you do decide to take the plunge, be sure and let us know how you make out.And more importantly, have fun!

You did the right think by installing on a default rig, NOW you can overclock.

I will do, I'm not sure if it'll be me or someone else that does the overclocking but I'll post how I get on. :)

Phew, that's good to hear! haha

Will, overclocking has never been easier than it is now. No more cpu/ram ratios, less heat, amazing bios interfaces, windows-based OC utilities that are actually not useless as in the past (although I still only use mine to monitor, and OC in bios as before). I personally went straight to 4.0 and began my incremental steps up from there. Temps on air after hours of simming are below 52c, with room temp about 74F. At 4.4ghz I get about 10 more fps than at 3.3ghz. I could easily OC to 4.8 at least, which reminds me....................rebooting to bios now lol.

The only time you ever need to reset anything is your BIOS. You would need to do this if you totally screwed up your OC.But, with the help of the Avsim team of "experts" we will get you running 7GHZ without a problem! B)
