Why can't people read the manuals?

Featured Replies

I've got to say this as it is really annoying me. I have been reading both this forum and the PMDG forum for many months now, and one thing I have noticed is the amount of questions that are answered by skiming the manuals.I am a great believer in the saying "there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers", unfortionatly it seems like some poeple think it is easier to ask these questions then researching the answer in the manuals. Both PMDG and Bryan have done wonders in producing, not only products that outshine their competitors, but manuals that are complex and answer all sorts of questions. These forums are for are getting full of simple install questions or how to select this and being lost inbetween is the important information that can help other people.1. Look in the manuals and see if you can work it out yourself. (it will make you feel good inside to learn these thing yourself)2. If you genuinely feel that the problem is a bug that can't be fixed by yourself, search the forum and/or Google. (you never know, it could be a common fault with an easy fix)3. Only when you have exhusted the above should you post a new topic.Remember all the time these developers are answering stupid questions they are spending lest time on making improvements (in PMDG's case, not finishing the 777)Rant over. Feel free to argue back or slag me off.

LOL.Just wanted to get it off my chest. I have noticed the ampout of post has dropped since I wrote this though. Just wanted you and the PMDG boys to be able to get on with something constructive instead of just quoting the manual.

Why do people think they can change that behavior by posting in a support forum about it?

Craig:Sometimes it's not so easy to get the information you need from reading the documents that usually come with software products. I have retired after 46 years in the hardware / software support arena and spent many nights, weekends, and holidays going thru manuals when new products, either hardware or software, were released so that I was up to speed when, not if, the customer would call with a question. It's that support that finally allows the customer to fully grasp the concept he didn't quite get from reading the manuals. So as a new user of FS2Crew I ask for a little patience from you more talented and experienced users, and maybe one day I can jump on this forum and with total confidence answer someones "stupid" question.Bob DemarestBirmingham, Al.

Bob,You missed the point or maybe I did not explain myself properly. The whole point of a forum is so that people can share knowledge, experience and thoughts, nobody disputes that. I have no problem with people asking for help and that is what we are here for. The fact that the flight sim community is so helpful and shares knowlefge is the reason why FSX is where it is today and not on the scrap heap, which is where many people thought it would be on release. Everybody needs help sometimes and sometime manuals are hard to read, what sounds simple when you know what you are doing and write down does not always come across that way. What I have a problem with is when somebody post questions like, "How do I open the doors?" or "How do I turn on the lights?" (believe me I've seen them). The answers to the questions are easy to find in the basic introduction manual or if they are not they will have probably been asked before, a simple search would find them. It does not need 5 people to ask the same thing and get the same answer. If you cannot find it in the manuals or with a search and you have to ask then fair enough. If it is a more technical problem that even after reading the manual you still don't understand then that is not a "stupid" question. If you look through my post you will see that I have asked questions as well as try to help people. If everybody knew 100% what they was doing from the off and everything worked perfect then there would be no need for a forum.Regards Bob and happy flying
