Multiplayer Stutters/Jerkiness?

Featured Replies

Hey all,How is everyone else's multiplayer experience? So far, mine's been 'ok', but I do see other aircraft jumping and stuttering quickly back and forth, especially when close and trying to formation fly. Does everyone get this? I am on a 10Mbps cable connection, hard-cabled ethernet @ 100mbps.Any suggestions as to why this might be?

I think it's the nature of the engine. It has always plagued MS flight sim related products IMO.

All you can really do is make sure your own connection is in good condition (which it appears to be). The rest is up to the other players in your session. If you do encounter lag, one thing you can do to help other players not hit you is to make very smooth movements and minimize your inputs on the controls. That won't have any noticeable effect on your system, but other players will see you jumping around less.I'd also avoid crowded taxiways in high-lag environments. You may move forward a few feet on your screen, but appear to wildly accelerate to another player, leading to a collision when you appear to snap back to where you stopped. I've seen feelings hurt over that sort of affair.

Ah, so this is commonly experienced by everyone else then... I thought it was just problems that my friend and I were experiencing. It doesn't sound like there's a great deal we can do about it then. Thanks for the replies.

The multiplayer is hit or miss. It averages on `acceptable' most of the time. Lag (even though I think it's something else which I will get to) is getting annoying. I'll often mic up, and say something then a few seconds later someone else mics up and I can hear what I said 3 seconds earlier echoing back through their audio. Choppy mic audio where you hear every other syllable of a word said. I've hosted large groups with no lag, then the other day I was told the lag was bad even though the entire group including myself all had full ping bars. (although it begs the question what the data scale is for that ping bar) I've seen the data usage the game uses during multiplayer and it's actually a minuscule amount being transfered even in large groups. It's got to be on MS's end how it's handling the data of large groups and keeping it in sync. I don't think it's a lag problem due to bandwidth, but a sync problem back at MS Tower.

Lag is inherently part of internet game play. Deal with it within the confines of your own personal tolerance and please don't complain about it repeatedly in game - chances are excellent we heard it the first time, we get it, we can't do much to fix your specific lag issue. One mention is enough. Two complaints is plenty. Three or more times is annoying. My personal suggestions if lag becomes too much of an issue:

  1. Try to cope as best you can
  2. Don't expect perfection
  3. Avoid using the MIC
  4. Try changing hosts
  5. Host your own game
  6. Lastly, you have no right to complain to others if you're constantly downloading warez/music/movies on your end while trying to play multiplayer games on the internet. This happened the other night.

Also make sure your graphics aren't set to high. This is a major cause of lag when people turn their setting higher then their computer can handle. Also your connection is very important, I'm still waiting on the official ports to open on router for Microsoft Flight, can't find this anywhere.

I found someone post to open port TCP+UDP 1863,3074 and UDP port 88. I opened them but would like to hear official word from Microsoft about it.Here's a quick way to set it up.1. Click start and in the run bar type: cmd2. Then in the box that pops up type: ipconfig then push enter3. Note your Default Gateway IP, and IPv4 address.4. Type default gateway ip into your webbrowser, in most cases 192.168.0.15. Login to your router and find the port forwarding section. On my D-link its under Advanced>Gaming6. Enter a name (MS FLight or something) and enter your IPv4 address into the IP address Box.7. In the UDP ports to open box enter

53,88, 1863, 3074

In the TCP ports to open box enter 53,80,443,1863, 3074

(according to Window's LIVE ports, not sure if Flight uses any others)8. Save all changes

Thanks for the additional replies. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't complaining and I'm not really experiencing typical 'lag'... i.e. rubber-banding, big jumps in aircraft position/location etc., but just the one other aircraft I fly with juddering in the position it's in. It just makes formation flying a little difficult, but generally the consistency is good. I really was just wondering if this is the general experience everyone has. I'm not unhappy with it per se.

I am not sure if Flight uses a different LIVE server than Age of Empires Online but this is the ports to open for windows live on it.Games for Windows Live related issues:“What ports need to be open to run Age of Empires Online?”

The following ports are required to be open to successfully play Age of Empires Online through the Games for Windows LIVE platform:

TCP 80UDP 88UDP 3074TCP 3074UDP 53TCP 53TCP 443

Xbox Live :FirewallIf you are using a software or hardware firewall, make sure the following network ports are open on the firewall:

  • Port 88 (UDP)
  • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 80 (TCP)
