Microsoft's source data for Flight scenery

Featured Replies

Maybe they inducted the Navigation data back in 2009 when Microsoft began developing Flight.

Isn't it best for MS that they keep a healthy amount of expired nav data in their sims and games (and publicly warn of that fact)? I mean, if they claim to be currant and someone uses their sim/game to plane a flight, what happens when they go out and run into a tower? Then here come the lawyers.

Try using that excuse with the FAA!

It would be nice if the data was updated. I would prefer to have the airports kept up to date at the very least.

And those lawyers will say that pilot was stupid and has no case. No real world pilot will use data from a game for real flying. I suppose the EULA of Flight will also have a line saying it's for entertainment only. Just like all other planning products that exist for FSX and others.

Well, in the case of FSX I didn't like it that various products used various AIRAC cycles: you never really knew what would work with what. But since Flight DLC will all come from MS, it would have been nice if the used data had been up to date or would be updated. On the other hand, keeping up with all the changes, probably cost a lof of time and money... and I rather have MS spending their time and money on some new planes and scenery. The only drawback of using older data is that you can get into problems when you use other resources for planning... It's fine with me that the Flight database seems to be the same as the FSX one, because now I can use FSX planners (like Plan-G) to plan my flights with great perfection.

Okay, I was just wondering if there was some deliberate decision to avoid tempting pilots to use the game in flight planning. Kind of like eliminating crash damage following 9/11, which I see as a sensitive gesture but also an attempt to avoid possible litigation.

No, there are only a handful of official sources that are legal for use in flight planning. I would not want to risk my certificate or life without making sure to check one of those.

However I do sometimes fly routes in FSX to get a feel for the area using my actual plan. It does a great job most of the time.

The stale data is a very small gripe for me, and doesn't detract from my opinion of the product. As was said earlier, I'd rather have the team working on other stuff.

Oh, no. I'm sure it's more of a "We already paid for this data that's in our files, and it's in the right format, ready to use. There's no point in trying to make it current because, as soon as we do, it'll start becoming obsolete again. It's mostly right, anyway."

I bought Sectionals, IFR High and Low, and Terminal Charts from the FAA back in April 2010 when Microsoft said they were starting the new game. As it was a total guess, I am hoping I am close. I think one radio frequency was off in Hawaii, but I am not sure if I am just misremembering it.

EDIT: It does not have the NDB EWABE(Honolulu) 242kHz.

I believe I read a while back that the Ewa Beach NDB was being shut down. I'll have to check.

EDIT: Hmmm... Well, it's still in the database at AirNav, current as of 5 APR 12.

It's not shown on the sectionals... neither the current one or my old one from 2002. Power output is only 25 watts, though. That may be why. I believe EVABE is mainly intended for use on approaches into Honolulu Intl. There's a marker beacon co-located with it, right under the approach to 8L.

I've never even used it in the air, but we dialed it up for ADF ground-checks when I was at the old Barber's Point NAS (now Kalaeloa), since it was maybe a mile from our ramp area.

RE-EDIT: Yeah, it's on the approach plate for the LOC RWY 8L - http://aeronav.faa.g...04/00754L8L.PDF

You are correct. It is showing up on my terminal chart ILS RWY 08L for PHNL.
