May 3, 201214 yr Hi I fly mainly in the UK and Europe, when flying single engined VFR I use Generation X Photographic Scenery which is great for flying at around 2000 - 6000 ft. However when flying a 737 at 37,000 ft I would prefer something like Ultimate Terrain X which I own but have not installed. My question - can I have preloaded scenery setups so I can use photographic scenery when flying VFR and UT when flying 'Airline' stuff. I don't want to check and uncheck lots of scenery items in the Scenery Library every time I load FSX. Also on this subject, is there anything better than UT Europe at the moment, I have had this software for many years but not really used it. Depending on the answer to the above question, I would like to install the best scenery available. Thanks Glen
May 3, 201214 yr Don't think you can, not easily at least. You could setup a batch file to copy (for example) vfr-scenery.cfg to scenery.cfg before starting fsx, and have another to copy ifr-scenery.cfg to scenery.cfg, but that's a bit clumsy. You can specify alternatives for fsx.cfg on the fsx command line, but I don't know of any way to tell fsx to use a different scenery.cfg file, which is a shame. Don't forget that disabling the scenery doesn't actually stop it being loaded, you need to remove it from the scenery list to do that.
May 3, 201214 yr FSX has had the ability to save settings forever. That's what the Save and Load buttons are for in the Settings page.
May 3, 201214 yr I have multiple scenery.cfg files, tailored for the different areas I fly in. I keep them in folders in the same location that the 'active' scenery.cfg file is located. When I want to change areas I simply copy the cfg file from the desired area folder and save it as the active scenery.cfg. For example, my Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX folder contains these folders: CFG_ALL, CFG_DEFAULT_ONLY, CFG_EUROPE, CFG_USA, CFG_EUROPE_USA, CFG_HAWAII, CFG_OZ Each folder contains a 'scenery.cfg' file and a copy with the appropriate area...'ALL_scenery.cfg', 'USA_scenery.cfg' to be used as a backup. Each tailored cfg file removes all 'out of area' scenery but keeps any libraries that might be shared. I also disable the default base scenery areas that fall outside the desired area...the files named with the scenery map row/column numbers. You can add a comment at the top of each cfg file so you can easily determine which one you currently have loaded.... //Hawaii cfg file or //default cfg file, etc I have a shortcut on my desktop that takes me directly to the scenery.cfg location so with just a couple of mouse clicks I can change scenery setups. I started using this technique a few years ago when I discovered that FSX was loading scenery files on the opposite side of the world from where I was flying! Paul
May 3, 201214 yr Author Thanks for your comments. I found a few posts from people saying when they reloaded a saved 'settings file' some of their setting were different. I might save a test file to check it out. Paul - Interesting method, I'll have to look into that. Glen Glen
May 4, 201214 yr Hi there, Keep in mind that Flight 1's [ultimate Terrain] UTX series does not actually consist of area-texture packages per se. The primary function of the UTX series is to accurately depict roads, streams & rivers, coastlines, railyards, roadways, etc. While UTX possesses the necessary textures to accurately reflect those specific components only, it is not a true 'area-texture' scenery package in the sense of accurately representing urban areas, cities, farmland, forests, etc. It does *not* contain textures for those types of elements- that is not UTX's function. While UTX does incorporate landclass information (the mechanism by which FSX selects the most appropriate type of texture to utilize & draw for a given situation & area [cityscape for urban areas, farmland for farms, wooded areas for forests, stoneface for rock canyons, etc.]), it does not actually contain the textures for those cities, farms, forests, canyons, etc. That is left to other products. For actual area/region-textures (farmland, cities, forests, golf courses, etc.), I very highly recommend Flight 1's GEX series (Ground Environment X) consisting of GEX North America, Europe, Africa & the Middle East and [recently released] Atlantic & Pacific Tropics. These packages consist of very realistic looking, appropriate and representative area/region-textures & related autogen notation for the respective regions. I believe that they are all available both in DVD and download editions. Take a peek at the following info.: http://www.flight1.c...oduct=gexusacan http://www.flight1.c...oduct=gexeurope http://www.flight1.c...product=gextrop http://www.flight1.c...product=gexafme I find that the combination of UTX & GEX provides for exceptionally realistic, enjoyable and immersive flying, and I consider the GEX series, and the UTX one too for that matter, both indispensable & "must-haves"!
