FS GS -- Show us what you get with Simflyers Scenery...

Featured Replies

All this talk about what FSGS can give us.... I would like to see what they can do with add-on scenery like Simflyers. If they can get add-on airports to run more smoothly I'd be the first in line to use their service. That's the whole point anyway since so many of us fly in and out of airports that have been updated. Everyone at some point in time has bought an add-on of their favorite international airport and that's where the slide show begins. I don't see any other benefit to FSGS. Anyone can produce good framerates in less populated areas with only the default scenery present. As long as you've got a good system and have read these message forums, you should be able to get decent framerates. The challenge is add-on scenery like Simflyers. I challenge FSGS to get Simflyer's KIAH or KEWR to run smoothly. If a statement is made like, 'we only guarantee performance with the default FS9 simulator' then what point is that. This is no more than what anyone can do with a little know how and research. The trick is to make this sim shine all the way around and that's what's been the problem....

Dillon, As you only pay for the service if you're satisfied, why don't you try the service with your choice of setup and see? You have nothing to lose and you can then let us all know if you're happy or not. Write a review for Avsim or post here in the forum.I think it really clear WHY they guarantee results with default setup (and given your signature, so should YOU) and it sounds like you are trying to be deliberately argumentative when the solution is to find out for yourself.Allcott

Just want to to clarify something on the FS-GS. When Micheal, is working with you on this....it's not only your default scenery; but also your add-ons used. Me personally, tried some simflyers, like fly tampa stuff better. Just personal preference. But, micheal will work with you on what YOU have on your system. He may make some recommendations; but it's your choice if you want to utilize them. Also, micheal tests just about every scenery, mesh, aircraft etc...so he's pretty up to speed on these releases. As to the simflyers scenery request. The only way to really know, is to see it's effect on your machine. As I've said before; I've had my framerates as low as 12.5-14...everything maxxed..AI,Lago Honolulu,RFP V.2 and some add on mesh. However, I don't care about the FPS...because the sim is smooth..no stutters etc.SO, you could post a screenie of the sim flyers...but unless you are actually flying, taxi etc on your computer...it's not going to really show much other than your FPS. So, based on yours and several others..if you saw around 12.5-14 FPS; most likely you'd be rather dissappointed. So, until you see it on your machine...it really doesn't matter Just a thought, but I wonder how many folks have actually emailed the FS-GS folks with their concerns/questions..they're very helpful, and will certainly try to answer any of those questions. Take Care. Fly Safe.Best,Dave

Hi Dave,This question is a matter of perception, so please bear with me...When I fly into a situation where I'm level (i.e., not in a turn that often creates stutters for many folks) and a busy scenery bogs the sim down to 12.5-14 it is not smooth. Simply because there is not enough frames per second to make it smooth to my eye. The sim doesn't become smooth for me until I see 22-24.My question is... even at 12.5-14 is the sim smooth? Smooth to your eye so that you couldn't tell if it was running at 13 or 26 FPS?Thanks,Greg

The biggest `problem` with the FS-GS tuneup is that it goes right to the heart of the keen simmer - it challenges the ego of someone who thinks they know what they're doing with computers. Note it's the ego that's challenged, not the technical expertise - there is ample demonstration that there is little technical expertise in the flight sim community. Much more dangerous to threaten peoples self-belief.Only glancing at a few of the many threads in this and many other forums it is abundantly clear that most `experts` are self-styled, self taught and frankly, self-delusional. Without the first clue what they're talking about. They hear or see something that is said to be beneficial, then repeat it, often to the point where it becomes received wisdom when it has absolutely no basis in computing `fact` whatsoever. I see the numerous posts about AGP settings, fog tables, fps locks, you name it, and for every pearl of wisdom there's a bucket of `snake oil`. What FS-GS do is so simple, so obvious that it beggars belief - they tailor-match YOUR system to FS. No-one elses, which is why what works for you won't work for the next guy or gal. It's also very sophisticated and very clever in that it requires a detailed knowledge of all hardware and software combinations AND the myriad complexities of Flight Sim.Still there are those who feel threatened by it. I for one WILL be using their service as soon as I upgrade my system, for no other reason than I have nothing to lose, and no ego to chafe. If it works, I get a better simming experience, save myself hundreds of fruitless hours of experimentation and tweaking and it only costs me 60 bucks. If it doesn't, I don't pay them. Sounds like an embarassingly good deal to me, and only those who THINK they know so much but actually don't could possibly disagree. And if they know so much, how come they don't share it with the rest of us? Tell us Dillon, (and I am sorry for singling you out, but you're just the latest of the naysayers) how did you fix the fps issue with the PMDG product? How did you magnificently tweal your settings so that it performs twice as fast as everyone elses? If you didn't, then you need FS-GS as much as I do. If you did then you need FS-GS if only to massage your ego that they couldn't do anything for you. So tell us how you did it and put FS-GS out of business.Put up, or shut up. This constant questioning of FS-GS is becoming boring. They are not going to tell you any secrets because there are no secrets to tell. I suspect that 90% of what they do is simply correcting the incompetent errors introduced into computer systems by well-intentioned amateurs. I shall soon find out. And then I won't tell because what they do in MY system is only of relevance to ME.Allcott

Oh yeah, I have one of those "rip off" Alienware 51's. Before I used FS-GS, I would try and fly the RFP2 with Lago and AI etc. As you can gues, had to turn settings down, etc.I was just trying to get a reasonable perception if you will of a smooth taxi takeoff etc. Out of curiosity I checked my framerates...averaged around 12-15 around the airport and runway areas....BUT when I began my takeoff roll in the 747, quite choppy; definetely didn't give a good perception of smooth rolling takeoff. Also too, although my graphics were Ok..with the ATI 9800 Pro and my machine..I really expected better...why I bought it in the first place Now, move forward..now have used the FS-GS service, Have all my sliders to max, exception cloud draw and viz distances..my preferences..and ground shadows off, justr don't care for them. Have building thunderstorms for my WX, along with some 3rd party mesh and textures. Basically, same scenario..only difference..I'm maxxed out now..my RFP@ 747 rolls down the runway smoothly no stutters..and my textures seem very sharp, and no blurries. So, I'm thinking...WOW that FPS must be outta sight. NOPE!. I check it in the same place as before were I was achieving 12.5-14 and upwards....guess what....FPS was around 13-15. But, the fluidity of the sim was very smooth. So, as I've said...don't care about framerates...just care about a smooth fluid flying sim. And that pretty much in a nutshell is FS-GS's goal as well. Sorry, for the long post. But hopefully; it clarified somethings.Best,Dave

Allcott,Very good points you bring up. I was one of those "self proclaimed" experts prior to using the service some months back. :( As I stated in several other posts, I do have many years of experience building my PC's and using FS. I have a high end machine that gave me satisfactory results with flight sim but I still wasn't 100% satisfied with what I saw on my monitor. When I investigated FS-GS I figured I'd try it because I really didn't have anything to lose. Not Satisfied,,Don't pay. I was very impressed with the service and Michael got into many things I never even thought of doing. I agree, that the nay sayers seem to put much effort into putting down and critisizing something they basically know nothing about. Fact is, if your totally happy with the performance you have, don't use the service, if your not, try it. You really don't have anything to lose.

Hmm ... I just wonder, is there anything special that they recommend? I mean, could you give an example, without telling any "secrets" of course? It's hard to image that there's anything else to do instead of shutting down background programs, maybe changing process priorities, and installing low res textures and stuff like that.-Daniel

I got the Fly Tampa's San Diego airport Scenary..Its a freakin Rip Off. For $20 bucks.. Thats it?Geeez.

Beta tester for SIMStarter

I have a simple question and test for FS-GS users. Set up whatever scenario you would like that is something a bit more than default FS9 at whatever airport you would like. I don't care what FSGS says and don't want to know any of thier secrets. Once you set up your scneario go to spot view and display the frame rate on your system. Don't move around just pick a point and remain there for a minute or so and note the fluctiations. I would like to know if your locking frame rates and at what your locking them at. Then see if the frame rate remains basically constant. I am talking if you lock at say 20, then does it stay within a frame or two after using FS GS? Then I would like you to unlock frames and report on the same thing. I think the sim has a problem with how it displays the scenery/traffic and weather that no amount of tweaking is going to fix. personally I may give this service try based on the results of this test, please be honest. This is an expensive service. Most other sims and games I have run smooth and steady with my P4 3.0ghz/ 1G / Radeon 9800 system. Thanks and I appreciate any reports here!Hornit

Fluctuations - I think that' a key point here. I had some performance problems when I first got FS2004 - I was getting 30-40 FPS but it was still stuttering and slow. Why? Because when I brought up the framerate counter it was going like: 35...15...55...33...22...17...40...It's very imprtant to have a constant framerate. Also, remember that the framerate indicator only shows frames PER SECOND. It's not very accurate because one second is a LONG time in computing. For example, 20 FPS does NOT mean that the screen was updated every 20th of a second, it only means that during the last second, the screen was updated 20 times. Maybe it was updated 15 times during the first third of that second, then only 5 times during the remaining two-thirds, causing very jerky motion? This is probably how FSGS achieves "smoother" performance without actually increasing the average FPS.
