Airports Labeled in Google Earth

Featured Replies

Maybe you've seen this, but...

If you have Google Earth installed on your PC, you can download KML files that label all (most?) of the airports in specified FAA regions.

To get the files, search Google for "FAA airport database in Google Earth (KML) files". Open one of the first websites found to see a direct link to the KML files:

http://www.justsoar....ublic/nasr_apt/

There are 10 files here, covering 9 FAA regions and one big file (apt_all.kml) that's a combination of all the others (loading this one in Google Earth will slow performance). Just right-click on each file and "save target as...". Be sure the saved filename extension is KML (Vista wants to save them with an XML extension).

Once saved, clicking on any of the KML files will start up Google Earth and take you to the region covered (you can also open a KML file inside of Google Earth). Zoom in to see the details. Right-click on the "push pins" to reveal some other airport data in the properties section.

Thanks must go to "justsoar" for posting the files. Although they are from 2008, I find these files very useful when flying around in FSX.

Enjoy!

Once I found a KML with all airport of the world with division in polygon of controlled airspace but wasn't able to see only by enable single zone or Google Earth would crash.

You can do the same thing in FSX by adding a couple of lines into your "Standard.xml" found in your Controls folder where your aircraft.cfg file is located. Open the Standard.xml file and add these lines then save.

I have this file installed in GE: https://productforum...rum/NKAzDzCeKEU

It has the vast majority of the airports in the world. I have only found a handful that are missing. It is point level data. It is organized by country and you can check/uncheck airports that you want to display. I use it to keep track of add on airports and I find it really helpful when I am looking for a particular type of weather. Also, if I have a certain amount of time for flying, it is easy to find airports where I have add on scenery that are a particular distance from another airport with add on scenery.

Wow! I like this. It's very convenient to check only the airports you want. Thank you.

FYI, I read that Google is "upping the ante":

"Adding to its revolutionary navigation service, Google is planning to release a new version of the Google Maps program, offering users a 3D aerial-mapping technology that provides details capable of showing objects just four inches wide. But as U.S. technology companies race to produce aerial maps with greater detail and visibility, critics are posing privacy concerns and warning that America is quickly becoming a surveillance society."
