June 19, 201213 yr {Cross-posted at other sites} Where can I/we get full size sectional maps of Alaska (and Hawaii)? Since the sheer size of Alaska is going to demand commitment, might as well jump in. FAA? Government Printing Office? I want large ones to put on the wall and stick pins in. With VOR, DME, etc.
June 19, 201213 yr I ordered a full set of Alaska WACs from http://www.mypilotst...ical_Charts.asp WACs are twice the scale of sectionals, so you don't need as many. They still include airfield, navaid, airway and terrain information, however. Here is a sample: If you do want sectionals, they also sell expired ones very cheap "For simulation/training purposes only" at http://www.mypilotst...tstore/sep/7089 They can also be viewed online here: http://vfrmap.com/
June 19, 201213 yr Oh, one thing... these are printed double-sided. So, they may not be ideal for wall-hanging.
June 19, 201213 yr Author Uh, there's a couple choices, some have (next edition) in parentheses. Next edition might be better, or does it matter. I can figure it out. Also, there is 'subscription'...
June 19, 201213 yr Aeronautical charts expire. Sectionals every six months, WACs annually. This is to make sure a real-world pilot has current charts that include any recent changes, like new radio frequencies or 400' tall antennas that somebody just built. The next editions are made available before the current ones expire, so that you can already have them when your current charts die. Buying a subscription is like subscribing to a magazine... they just automatically send you the new ones. None of that really matters for sims, so long as the information remains more or less correct. My Hawaii sectional I've been using expired a decade ago. Most pilots, flying clubs and FBOs are happy to give away their expired charts if somebody can use them for sims, rather than tossing them in the trash.
June 19, 201213 yr If using paper charts, you may also find a plotter handy. It has scale markings for measuring distances on sectionals and WACs, and is great for plotting navaid and course bearings. http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/516
June 19, 201213 yr Hey gang, If you're looking for maps, another place to go is this website: http://www.faa.gov/airports/runway_safety/diagrams/ It actually contains many diagrams etc for many airports in the U.S. I find the standard airport diagrams handy, but there are also a lot of other charts available. And it's free, pdf format, easy to print. I find it especially handy during some missions since as of now you're unable to open up the map in-game. Cheers, Darryl
June 19, 201213 yr Author There is an aviation high school and aeronautics university near where I live in S.F. Bay Area. May stop by their bookstores.
June 20, 201213 yr I would just like to remind everybody that getting charts for Alaska, and for Hawai'i, is as easy as going to the ... Avsim library! Just to mention a few, Matt Fox and David Myers have both placed large chunks of Alaska, perhaps all of it, there and it is free for the taking. Here is a short list of Matt's contributions: Navigation and ATC - Navigation Section by Matt Fox - Anchorage TAC - Dutch Harbor Sect - Fairbanks Sect/TAC - Juneau Sect - Ketchikan Sect - Kodiak Sect/TAC - Nome Sect - Point Barrow Sect - Seaward Sect - Western Aleutian Islands East Sect - Western Aleutian Islands West Sect - Whitehorse Sect also in other packages: - Anchorage, Bethel, Cold Bay, Dutch Harbor, Juneau, Ketchikan, Kodiak, McGrath, Seward, Western Aleutian Islands and Whitehorse Sectionals - Cape Lisburne, Dawson, Fairbanks, Point Barro, Nome and Hawaiian Islands Sectionals. Also included are updated Terminal Area Charts for Anchorage and Fairbanks that are not distorted. - Hawaii Sect Since Matt includes the chart coordinates in his packages, you might be able to use them in the map programs available for free! And you can check David's contributions yourselves. He has placed an extremely large and varied selection of full-size charts in the library, many of them over 20-25 MB in size! Matt's have been reduced and are more manageable. Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
June 20, 201213 yr I used to fly around Alaska in sims, and just bought a couple of sectionals, cause I was usually flying in the same areas and didn't really need a WAC chart. Lots of times you can get expired sectionals as was already mentioned, for next to nothing.
June 20, 201213 yr If you want a really neat one to hang on your wall, how about a 3D raised-relief chart? http://www.pilotshop....html?cPath=509
