May 24, 200422 yr Hiya all,Can anyone help me with the FS9.cfg. What I would like to know is what settings (numbers) do i have to change to make FS2004 run more smooth. Many thanks,L.Jim
May 24, 200422 yr L.JimThat's a bit to broad a question to answer easily. Really altering the.cfg to achieve performance improvements will depend to a great extent on what you have installed.EG: there are things you can alter to improve the appearance of scenery when you have addon mesh installed or whatever. However - I would say your best bet is to experiment with the Display and Hardware settings within FS and also those available to you within the settings section for your Video card and see what - if any- differences in performance( FPS,smoothness etc)each change makes.Change only one thing at a time, check it out thoroughly before moving on to the next.I'm afraid there really is no " magic bullet" for FS9- even to the extent that similar settings can produce widely differing results on two similar systems.Once you have arrived at the best setup for your system you can save a copy of the FS9.cfg ( because your latest settings are in there anyway) so that in the future you can go back easily.Video card settings should be dealt with in the same way - alter one thing at a time - try it out before changing anything else.A few searches on here for " performance","settings" "Smoothness" etc wil bring up literally thousands of posts on the subject with advice that is good , bad, or indifferent . Read a few hundred of them and you'll realise that nothing about FS9 performance is set in stone!Good luckDave
May 24, 200422 yr L.Jim, I've kept up on the tweaks in the forums and have kept a notepad log of what tweaks I have done. Numbers for tweaks are not in order, some have been removed as they have no effect on my fps:My FS9.cfg TWEAKS TODATE AND OTHER ADJS. (AS OF May 24, 2004)1. DISPLAY DEVICE LINE change (Thanks to Geofa) BIG DIFF IN FPS!:[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA Drivers on Win2K/XP]---add thisMode=1024x768x32TextureAGP=0RenderToTexture=1PanelAsTexture=0-----add thisTriLinear=1MipBias=8this tweak allows you to turn FS internal Autogen right off (not needed) to increase frame rates.2. TERRAIN CHANGES:TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.5000003. AUTOGEN TWEAK (HELPS PERFORMANCE INCREASES fps):TERRAIN_USE_VECTOR_OBJECTS=1--change to =0 (OK,TO leave at =1 Tho)4. DECOMPRESSED ENTIRE FS9 GAME Directory. Saved me disc space. Supposed to increase fps, but I haven't noticed any change.9. You get a huge performance boost and drastically reduzed stutter by disabling VFR traffic and setting the following parameter in your FS9.cfgCHANGE OR INSERT THE FOLLOWING ENTRY:[TrafficManager]IFROnly=110. rename the file 'default.xml' in the folder H:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9Autogen. Rename it to something like default.xml.org... SOME recommend using the file 'fs9xml.zip' that's in the Avsim library. I don't use anything in here. Doesn't have any noticeable effect on my enjoyment of sim. I don't care if I don't see fast food signs anyway...LOL.11.Add this to beginning of FS9.cfg file:[OLDMODULES]FSSound.dll=112. Changed the following from what I picked up in the forums:MAX_UNLIMITED_VIS=96560[sOUND]SOUND=1SOUND_FADER1=0.500000SOUND_FADER2=0.460000SOUND_FADER3=0.620000SOUND_FADER4=0.800000SOUND_FADER5=0.810000SOUND_FADER6=1.000000SOUND_QUALITY=1Channels=2SamplesPerSec=44100BitsPerSample=16[TERRAIN]TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=60.000000TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=200.000000TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=7TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=3TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=0TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=5.000000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=8.000000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=413. No adverse affects on my system (Don't usually like touching registry but quite confident in doing this) This appears to be working for me, noticeable performance improvement: START/RUN/regedit, THENHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 - this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive yeilds faster performance.2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernel to Run in memory improves system performance alot. Reboot and watch your system fly ..happy tweakin'! This tweak really did noticeably increase my FPS.Also, I would recommend rebuilding your FS9.cfg file. Rename your existing file and restart FS9 and let it rebuild the file and then make the changes above that apply to FS9.cfg. I noticed a diffrence in system performance here too. In fact I will make it a habit to rebuild the FS9.cfg file every so often from now on.Regards,Tom i913900KF (5.8GHz) | Case: Fractal PopAir RGB I Gigabyte Z790 UD AX| MSI Gaming RTX 4070Ti Super 16GB | Kingston Fury Beast 64GB DDR5 5200Mhz | SOLIDIGM P41 Plus 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD | Samsung SSD 870 EVO 2TB | Thermalright Frozen Notte 240 MM Liquid Cooling | LG EVO 42" Monitor 3840 x 2160 120Hz | Honeycomb Alpha & Bravo | Logitech G Pro pedals | Tobii EyeTracker | 850W Thermaltake 80+ GOLD |
May 24, 200422 yr Commercial Member Hi Tom, There is 2 thing I don't recommend to touch is:-TextureAGP=0 erase this line, because it will disable the agp texture acceleration.-MipBias=8, this line leave it to 4, it's the mip map slider in fs2004 display, more then 5, there is considerable frame rate hit and flickering.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs Kind RegardsChris Willis
May 25, 200422 yr "2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernel to Run in memory improves system performance alot. Reboot and watch your system fly ..happy tweakin'! This tweak really did noticeably increase my FPS."Owners of systems with ATI cards should be very careful of this one. Some ATI cards don't like LargeSystemCache... to the extend that the system may require a complete reformat of the hard drive!Use this with caution!Greg
May 25, 200422 yr I want to second Greg's warning about these registry tweaks. I tried them and experienced some file corruption and "delayed write fail" error messages. I do have a Radeon 9600XT video card, but none of the error messages referred to it. The last error message cited an inability to write to the System 32 folder so I called a halt to the experiment at that point.Tweaking the Windows XP registry for performance seems to be more dangerous than it was with Windows 98/ME.Tweaking the FS9 cfg file in search of better performance is savage fun, sometimes I think it's better to convince yourself thatstutters are just a part of FS9's charm. Then you must learn to enjoy them.Douglas
May 25, 200422 yr Greg and Douglas, you are correct. I don't like fooling with the Registry entries either. But I remember reading something about the ATI cards not liking these tweaks. I have an Nvidia Ti4200 and have not seen any reports of adverse effects or error messages, so I went along with the tip. I am happy with it thus far though. Chris, thanks too for the tip. I will amend my tweaks as you stated. I Appreciate the feedback from you guys. May 25, 200422 yr Hi all,Thanks for all the tips and advises for the FS9.cfg file and the Regedit. However typical I have a ATI 9800PRO card and does anyone have any experience with changing the LargeSystemCache setting to 1????Will Windows really trip (well what's new) but with this setting??L.Jim
May 25, 200422 yr Author Yes, I've tried it with a 9800 Pro. DON'T DO IT. Just as a test,I tried the LSC "tweak" with a fresh install of WinXP Pro on a spare drive and did, indeed, end up with a corrupted registry.Doug Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage.
