June 25, 201213 yr Moderator I've never used Steam since I am not a "gamer" but I want to buy F1 2011 from Steam. I have already created an online account and all that is left to do is go through the purchase phase. However I have the following few questions which I cant seem to find a google answer for. 1. After purchasing a game via Steam using a web browser, do you get a download email link for the .exe or do you download it via a link on the purchase page? 2. If I buy it via my internet computer and download it on my internet computer, can I then take the downloaded .exe which I will put on a portable HD and install it on my FSX computer? 3. Is it necessary to actually install the Steam app on the rig that I want to install and run the game on if I dont plan on playing online? The main thing is, I dont want to download it on my FSX computer since I dont run a security program on that computer and the fact that if I dont need to have the Steam app installed to make it work, I would rather skip it. Although, if none of the above are possible, then I will just install the Steam app on my FSX rig and download it there unless it can be downloaded on another computer and then transferred to the computer that I want to install it on. Thanks in advance. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
June 25, 201213 yr I have to say my wife will hate you now for reminding me about this game! I think I will be buying this soon! I use steam for Team Fortress 2. Once it downloaded the game it didn't need to be connected to the internet to play (unless it was multiplayer) I am not sure how it would work for other steam downloaded games. You could probably get a very quick response from steam directly that will be more accurate. Just checked amazon. $17.99 http://www.amazon.com/Codemasters-F1-2011/dp/B005S2TW4K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340662660&sr=8-2&keywords=f1+2011 Save some money! Chris Miller
June 25, 201213 yr Steam has a download manager that downloads the games for you. When it has downloaded it will give you the option to back-up either to another drive or to DVD's. First you will need to download the Steam software then it will grab the game for you. Steam sits on your notification icons. I am a big time Total War gamer so this is why I use steam....but like Chris not on the Flight stuff at all. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
June 25, 201213 yr Author Moderator Just checked amazon. $17.99 http://www.amazon.co...eywords=f1 2011 Save some money! Ah, thanks for the link. I went ahead and bought it from there for the $17.99 and signed up for the free trial shipping thing (which I will cancel tomorrow before I forget) and got next day delivery with tax for $21.98. I think it was $49 on Steam, so thanks to your link I saved $30 and will get it tomorrow and dont need to fiddle with the whole Steam process. BTW, looks like a cool racing game. I dont know all that much about F1, but have always loved open well racing, be it F1 or the Indy Car series, however, I tend to know a lot more about Indy car since I follow it more closely and most of the races are here in the US. Cant wait to give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks again for the link. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
June 26, 201213 yr Just for future reference: Q. After purchasing a game via Steam using a web browser, do you get a download email link for the .exe or do you download it via a link on the purchase page? A. You download it via the Steam client software. The purchase will be linked to the account you bought it with on the webpage. It will display in the Library within the Steam software and you can then download it. Q, If I buy it via my internet computer and download it on my internet computer, can I then take the downloaded .exe which I will put on a portable HD and install it on my FSX computer? A. Yes, you can download it on your internet computer and create a local backup (to CD/DVD/whatever), transfer it to your FSX computer and restore the backup (basically a simple extraction/installation process). Q. Is it necessary to actually install the Steam app on the rig that I want to install and run the game on if I dont plan on playing online? A. Yes (most of the times). Some games can be launched with the executable and without running Steam, but to restore a backup you transfer from your download PC, you will need Steam.
June 26, 201213 yr Author Moderator Thanks for the answers Intrance. Although I went ahead and bought it on Amazon, it is helpful to know the answers you provided in case I decide to use Stream in the future for any software purchases. Regards Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
