Looking to upgrade from AMD 1100T to Intel 3770K

Featured Replies

I am in the planning stages from my next computer and am looking at the 3770k.

I put together my current computer on a low budget(current specs can be found in my sig below) And now i have a chance to start over from nearly scratch.

I will be buying a new motherboard and memory(16gb), But I will keep my recently purchased MSI GTX 560Ti-hawk til I can save up for a current gen pci express x16 3.0 video card(possibly a GTX 670)

I am not too concerned about overclocking the cpu from the beginning, But would like to try it later on if i can get a better cpu cooler.

Will I see better performance fps-wise in FSX? I wish to see a constant 30-35 fps in FSX but the best i can do with my current setup is 15-20 fps in dense scenery areas. I also plan to use this computer to try my hand at rendering stuff that use Pov-Ray or similar programs.

My budget is $1100USD for this and these are the items i have on my list of things to build my next computer:

If anyone could post a better recommendation for the items on my list, I would be interested in hearing those ideas.

If you use the Intel Turbo mode you should see an improvement in FPS but not a constant 30-35 as you hope if you use add-ons. 16GB ram is overkill for FSX but maybe you have some multi-media apps that can take advantage of the RAM, Photoshop, Sony Vegas, or other games. I saw nothing listed for colling. I would not stick with default cooling unless you plan to only run a normal processor speeds.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

I am not fixed on trying to overclock anything at this time, so a cooler will be a purchase sometime down the road.

As for addons, I do not have many of them.

A couple things:

1) Ivy Bridge runs hot when overclocked, so you definitely want a good cooler

2) if you're building this new (and you are) it's best to install the cooler at the time of initial build since most coolers require you to change the backplate and most cases don't provide adequate access to the backside of the CPU socket.

The case I plan to purchase has the hole in the motherboard tray or whatever it is called to change backplates while the motherboard is installed.

As for cooling, I plan to purchase a Corsair CPU watercooler such as the H80 or H100 at a later time

Those mobo tray CPU socket cutouts are really hit or miss in my experience. H80 is good but loud, H100 is better.

Nope, don't buy the 3770k, nor 16GB RAM.

The Ivy Bridge architecture is just a die shrink of the Sandy Bridge, it's not a whole new architecture, it's just smaller. What does this mean? Intel didn't aim to improve performance, 3770k isn't any better than 2500k or 2600k, it just consumes a bit less power (not that you will ever notice it), yet it costs about $80 more.

16GB RAM is overkill, trust me, you won't ever use more than 6, so 8 is enough.

The case is overkill aswell, you don't need a full tower case. Get Corsair 400R Carbide, I have it and it has an excellent build quality, more than enough for me and you.

I recommend you get i5 2500k, 8GB RAM and Corsair 400R case, and with the money you save from that buy Corsair H100, then you can overclock safely.

Has the Sandy Bridge vs. Ivy Bridge issue been settled? It sounds like it has. How sad!
