Stutter problem

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm having a problem with my new PC and FS2004. Here are my specs :

- Core I5 3570K overclocked to 4.2Ghz with a HR-02 cooler

- GTX560 Ti

- Corsair Force GT 120Gb SSD

- OCZ ZS Series 550W

- 8Gb DDR3

My sim is turning great on max settings. I'm locking my frames at 60FPS and whatever scenery I use, weather I set or amount of trafic it stays at 60FPS.

But unfortunately I'm having a problem with stutters. Every 3 seconds approximately the frame goes a second to 59.3 and then switches back to 60. This creates a stutter each time which is very annoying. I didn't had this problem with my old PC.

What can be the cause of such a constant stutter ? I did a fresh windows install last week, it was running great until this problem came back some days ago.

Do you have any idea where to look ?

Thank you,

Maxime.

I don't think the FPS going from 60 to 59.3 could cause stutters, but anyway, I recently made a change in my CFG which reduced stutters by 99%. Add TextureMaxLoad =10(default is 3 and don't exceed 10) in your CFG directly under TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT= entry and see if it helps. Of course, what works for me might not work for you too, but there is no harm of trying and you can always delete the line.

My system is set to lock fps at 60 and I am constantly seeing them fluctuate anywhere between 58 and 60 but this does not cause any stuttering - my system is very similar to yours. Try locking your fps at a different figure - say, 50 or 70. Many people post here that they lock their fps at 25 or 30 fps but if I do that on my rig then FS9 performs appallingly - don't ask me why! 60 fps is my sweet spot and maybe you need to find yours? Mind you, I don't run zillions of addons like many others do!

Another thing - and I don't know why people do this - I notice that you have over-clocked your processor. I am always suspicious when parts or a computer are made to do what they were not intended to do and wonder what effects they may cause. Now I know that many people do over-clock but if the manufacturer considers a processor is able to work faster then why don't they do that themselves and charge a bit more for the higher performance? Remember the old adage - if it ain't broke ....!!!!

Hello,

Thanks for your answers ;-) It worked some days perfectly at 60FPS withouth any stutter and then started suddenly. When I start a flight, during 10 seconds everything is normal, 60FPS and then the stutter begins. What I currently have on my "possible problem list" :

- Overclock : Will try to set the default settings and see if I still get the same problem or not.

- Antivirus : Will try to shut it down and see if the problem still occurs.

- FSUIPC : Can mayby cause stuttering. Will try to disable it.

Thank you,

Maxime.

You should check your textures for missing alpha channels, use DxtFixerX for this. Get it from the avsim library, it works for FS9 too.

Locking the FPS to 30 is nowadays possible for Nvidia users, as the newer drivers and Nvidia Inspector allows you to lock the Vsync at 1/2 default rate.

Your monitor probably has a 60hz update frequency, so selecting 1/2 Vsync and locking the FPS in FS9 to 30 works very well.

You don't say if you have many Addons installed. Perhaps there is something which is loading into memory every few seconds and is causing an overload? How much AI traffic are you running and what do you have autogen set to?

On the subject of over-clocking my i5 processor runs at its default of 3.2 Ghz and FS9 is fine so I don't think over-clocking yours to 4.2 Ghz is really going to make any difference. As for your nVidia card I have exactly the same one - great card, too!!

This occurs because you either are not running vSync, or are running windowed mode and setting an FPS lock to something other than your monitor refresh rate (which appears to be 60 Hz in this case).

Probably your SSD .Its a common problem with SSD"s .I hope you didnt defrag your ssd....Trim should do the job.

I may be missing a trick here but I don't understand the point of halving the Vsync rate so that I can halve the FPS rate when everything works OK at it is?

Confused!

Well let me try to unconfuse you and point you to one of the most discussed threads here this year:

Try it and see for yourself.

However, note that this will NOT work in FS9 windowed mode.

Thanx for this, neumanix, never even seen that myself.

Thank you, Neumanix. I was not aware of this thread at all - possible because it is in the FSX forum and I don't run that version.

I now understand a lot more about the subject and come to the conclusion that it won't make any difference for me as I have no stutter or micro stutters in FS9 running at 60 fps (the refresh rate of my monitor).
