August 29, 201213 yr In the "real world" do VFR pilots tune into ILS signals ( if available ) on final approach leg to a runway? I'm not suggesting a full IFR approach or flying in IMC, just simply tuning into the ILS to assist with finals. It occurred to me recently when flying into unfamiliar airports ( in FSX) that the ILS signals, especially the glide slope can help with stable approach and landing. Anthony O'Brien
August 29, 201213 yr It is something helpful to know you are lined up on the correct runway. During VFR conditions and on a visual landing we still dial in the ILS frequency. You can never be to sure that you are landing on the correct runway. Chris Miller
August 29, 201213 yr No point not tuning it if it's available... There are cases where aircraft have wrongly identified runways or even airports, so an added bit of confirmation shouldn't be avoided just for the sake of "flying VFR".... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
August 29, 201213 yr I've read quite often even of pilots tuning the ILS on take-off to be sure they've lined up on the correct runway. Just because you're flying VFR doesn't mean you suddenly aren't allowed to use certain navigational aids. John-Alan Pascoe

Just because you're flying VFR doesn't mean you suddenly aren't allowed to use certain navigational aids. You'd do that anyway in case you had to return to the field due to an emergency, one less thing to be fiddling about with up in the air. Regards, Ró Rónán O Cadhain.
August 29, 201213 yr Author Lot's of good information. So my instincts were good after-all!!!! My PPL is on hold for the moment ( temporarily I hope, money reasons). The next best thing to an instructor is AVSIM  Anthony O'Brien

The next best thing to an instructor is AVSIM  Out of interest, who are you doing you PPL with? NFC? Atlantic? How much were they charging if you don't mind my asking? My son is at my to let him get his PPL, and I think it may well be time to look seriously at it...Would you recommend them? He's got about 8 hours under his belt at this stage, but he hasn't even gotten his student license so can't solo.... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.

August 30, 201213 yr @Ró.PM'd you. Thanks. Leading the young one down the dark path of despair!!! I'd say it's something closer to me being dragged down it by him, with requests for my cheque book enroute.... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
August 30, 201213 yr Haha! I am not looking forward to that. Just don't let them near your FS, if they get their hands on FS, they're hooked.... My eldest son is dead set on becoming a pilot, my second eldest is pretty much the same, but he's a bit younger, so probably not quite as dead set yet, then to my shock and horror, my 9 year old daughter declared a month or so back "I think I want to be a pilot too, FSX is really fun... " I'm going to be broke if this keeps up... Why couldn't they want to be doctors or something, much cheaper.... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.

August 30, 201213 yr Oh man. I think we should start a fund drive here for you to pay for your children. You are really making me worry about the kid coming, haha! Chris Miller

Haha, don't worry about me, I've plenty in the bank for "A rainy day", just didn't think the rainy day would be 2 if not 3 kids wanting to become airline pilots.... Looking like the O'Cadhains will be added to the list of families who have an Aer Lingus Pilot's seat as a family heir loom... Don't worry about your kid, you've 20 years ahead of you to save up for his/her training... B) Rónán O Cadhain.
