June 30, 200421 yr Anyone successfull getting FS9 to run in Linux using Wine or WineX?I have got my Linux system working now and am thinking about diving in and seeing if I could get it to work. FS9 is practically the only reason I dual boot back into XP anymore, so if I could get it working in Linux I would be fairly pleased. My other option is to use VMWare and run a virtual Windows XP machine in Linux, but I don't think that would work too well.

It is sloooooow running windows, file I/O is like watching paint dry, and if I remember right the video card isn't 3D accelerated.
June 30, 200421 yr Put a partition on the HD with Windows on it, and you can run FS from there...Yes,it's called a dual boot system and he's said he's doing that already :-rollJohn http://homepage.eircom.net/~eamonnmca/images/logo_ba.JPGwww.bavirtual.co.uk Senior Captain Simflight.com Staff Reviewer
June 30, 200421 yr Well I got Wine installed last night, but ran out of time to attempt to install FS9 in my linux partition. I'll work on that tonight hopefully.I think I would have a better chance using WineX (they apparently has gotten over 200 Win32 games running in Linux, including recent titles like Tron 2.0), but that is not available freely. :-(
June 30, 200421 yr Hehe, FS2002 was a major factor for me to switch over to WinXP after five years of exclusive Linux installations on my PC. It's a fantastic system, I still prefer it on the server side, but life with WinXP is a lot easier at the moment. Oh, and I can't stand all that fancy KDE and Gnome stuff - to me they both feel like bad Windows copies. Real men use fvwm(2) and vi ;)I'll keep my eyes on this thread nonetheless, because I'd like to know how far WINE has come, and if FS9 can run on Linux. Good luck!Just my 2c (EUR)VOlker :]
June 30, 200421 yr Hm, this Fluxbox WM looks interesting. Nano is okay, I used pine as my main mail reader for some time and the editor is very similar (pine -> pico -> nano, as far as I remember).Always interesting to see how easy Linux discussions start to heat up ;) That's why I like the FS community so much, the people are so calm and friendly compared to other topics :) (exceptions to the rule exist, of course)VOlker :]
June 30, 200421 yr I like Fluxbox because of the simpleness of the UI. I don't need the bloat that comes with GNome and KDE, so I stay away from it. However, I can definately see why one would want to use KDE/Gnome, they are very refined, feature rich UIs :)And nano, I use it because I just need a simple text editing program, no fancy stuff. VI and Emacs make me take a step back.....too much stuff :)
July 1, 200421 yr Moderator Just out of curiosity, why? That seems about as pointless as folks who are MAC users trying to emulate Windows so they can run Win apps on their MAC... Actually, that does make some sense, 'cause there aren't a whole lot of apps FOR a MAC to begin with... :)We've got folks trying to turn their TV into a PC and their PC into a TV. What's next, making toast? :) Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
July 1, 200421 yr Well, for me, the reason I would want FS9 in linux is so that I could get rid of windows. There is so suitable alterntive to MSFS that I can use in linux, but there are plenty of suitable alternatives in linux for every application I use in windows. So if I can get the one application that sticks me in Windows into linux, then I can finally dump Windows and make my life easier :)
July 1, 200421 yr x2I am not a windows kind of guy...I try my best to avoid Microsoft, except the flight simulator series which is excellent. I recently formated and I had 153 viruses in my Windows Partion. Linux = 0 viruses. And Linux is much better for programming, even though I do not program at all. I just feel more "secure" on a Linux OS. Dan
