September 23, 201213 yr Some more VOR navigation practice. Enjoy. Thank you. Rick $Silver Donor EAA 1317610 I7-7700K @ 4.5ghz, MSI Z270 Gaming MB, 32gb 3200, Geforce RTX2080 Super O/C, 28" Samsung 4k Monitor, Various SSD, HD, and peripherals
September 23, 201213 yr Tongue-in-cheek question for you purists :-). I know there are some of you who do the aerocache hunts without the detector enabled. OK, so if the aerocache is a vortac, do you use the VOR? (Have to admit, I always use all the help I can get.)
September 23, 201213 yr  VOR is always on the chart so just look at the chart. I don't ever bother tuning the VOR radio or twisting the knob on the head. Too much trouble. Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
September 24, 201213 yr Author If it's a VOR cache, I always tune the radio(s). After all, that's what the cache is about, learning VOR navigation. I learned it several decades ago, but it never hurts to refresh. Plus, it adds another small dimension to the hunt. Also, if I'm flying GA in FSX, I use the VOR's instead of the GPS since when I learned to fly there were no GPSR's available and VOR navigation was the norm. But, it's all in what you like personally. Thank you. September 24, 201213 yr I went back into my vast picture archives to find this. Just more fantastic detail that most people would never even see. And what a view, I want to build a house there. Now, who would actually land and climb the hill to check this out. At least I think this is the VOR in question from what I remember. Edit: I bad, just checked and this is NOT the correct VOR. I don't seem to have the Molokai Vortac yet. Guess I will have to go find it now.
September 24, 201213 yr I just landed at Port Hardy in Canada and there is nothing there, not even land! But, there is the VOR object, the precise model that Steve shows, sitting in the water. I had flown there with the Mustang for its speed, but had to switch to the Icon to land. Best regards, Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
September 24, 201213 yr Well, I did find the correct "Molokai Vortac" today. I collected it in the air and landed a couple miles away and made the climb. Took me some time to find it on the ground. It is well hidden in the trees. Funny thing, when I got back to the aircraft I found it floating about 6 feet in the air. I could walk under and around it. As I did so it kept moving around. When I entered it I just dropped to the ground. I cranked out full flapes and took off and flew back to the airport. Molakai airport is really well rendered. Complete with ground handeling equipment and a fire station. A sign of what "was" to come, no doubt. So Luis, your trip to Canada sounds pretty bleak and wet. Was the VOR in operation? Steve
September 24, 201213 yr Author I had collected this one a while back, but flew to it just for kicks. I found it without any trouble and then did a bit of sightseeing. On the way back is when I practiced my engine out drill. Much fun. Thank you. September 25, 201213 yr You know, Steve, I don't yet know if the VOR in Canada is operational. I was flying my flight plan in the Mustang because the Cub was taking too long, and I was so shocked when I arrived at Port Hardy and it was only water, no land class, no autogen, nothing. So, I had to switch to the Icon in order to land. Neither of those aircraft have IFR equipment. When I go back to that flight, with final destination at Vancouver, I shall take off in the Icon, then switch to the Maule to check the VOR. By the way, those are pretty funny pictures of the Cub floating in the air. Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
