FSX Reinstall and directory name

Featured Replies

Before I go any further in getting my FSX reinstalled since reinstalling Windows...

I used to have FSX installed in "E:\Flight Simulator X". With this new installation, I didn't notice the "Microsoft" in the directory name, so now it's installed in "E:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X".

Now, to put this in context, after installing FSX and Acceleration and various payware addons (for the various registry entries and such), my intent is to copy my FSX backup over top of everything to restore my full FSX setup. (My standard procedure with FS9, at least...)

Does it make any real difference if the directory name is different once I copy the backup files over? Or do I need to uninstall what I have and reinstall (and re-activate) again to fix the directory name?

Why don't you just rename the "E:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X" directory and remove Microsoft?

Best regards,

Jim

Jim, I think changing the folder name will break all the paths to FSX.EXE.

Delete all files/folders in the new directory. Highhlight/copy all the files/folders int old directory and paste into the new directory.

That *might* work unless there are internal files that reference the original folder. Best bet - reinstall and out it where you want it -OR- get the FSX registry repair tool. Rename the folder to what you want and then use the tool to correct the registry entries.

Actually, I had completely forgotten that the registry tool even existed.... Wonder how I could have done that?

Any files themselves that might reference absolute file locations, now that I think of it, will just be overwritten anyway when I restore the actual backups, and the registry tool should be exactly what I need to allow me to simply rename the directory and update the registry... I'd literally have needed to use the registry tool to fix the FS9 registry tools after uninstalling FSX anyway, since the FSX uninstall wipes out the FS9 registry entries (been there, done that).

Thanks all for the help! :)

You can name your FSX folder anything you want and place it anywhere you want. If there's an issue, one only needs to go to the Flight One Library and download the program to fix the registry so that it shows the correct paths to FSX - http://www.flight1.com/view.asp?page=library.

Best regards,
