Difference between FS9 and FSX version?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have only the FSX version at the moment, but considering a second purchase to get the FS9 version. I'd fly it more only FSX is too unstable to risk a 12 hour flight online, to only have a CTD 9 hours into the flight (and I know FSX is the problem, not the aircraft!).

What, if anything, is different between the two versions of aircraft?

Best regards,

Robin.

I don't remember specifically, but from most posts I have read, the differences are fairly minor. Some annimations, lighting effects, etc.

In fs9 I have done countless 13+ hour flights the the MD-11. And never any crashes when landing.

It's very rare I have a crash, but it happens only in the JFK area. Probably some kind of bad AI as I do not usually fly to USA.

In FSX, the very first days of trying I got crashes nearly every flight with a Tu-154, and no, it wasn't the aircraft.

Microsoft like other "developers" roll out products before they're really made. Remember how FSX was in the first days of release?

The PMDG MD-11 is nearly the same in both versions, at least from what I have seen. I believe even the textures are. In my opinion it looks much better in FS9 due to the fact you can use more antialiasing and anisotropic since FS9 is much less demanding.

I'd fly it more only FSX is too unstable to risk a 12 hour flight online

I sincerely do not understand this... I must be one of the "lucky" ones..

I just counted up 15 BAV flights in the PMDG 74F that were roughly 12 or more hours... longest being 14.7hrs KSFO - VHHH (this just BAV flights).

Maybe this will change now that I am switching to Win7 and new hardware.

I'm on Win7x64 and I can report the same. The only times FS got hosed, it was due to external applications interfering (SquawkBox, etc). I've never had out of memory errors or anything.

That is very good to hear... thanks Kyle. For me it was like you say... or "bad" scenery.

Above "report" was using XP x64... Win7 version now is the x64 pro.

I shall get the FS9 version then!

Thanks everyone!

PS: The CTDs I have had with FSX were due only to FSX - I have no add-on scenery. I'm 99% sure the crash was due to AutoGen as it was the only time I flew with it enabled, and was 6 hours into an 8 hour flight when it crashed (UK to Iceland in a piston). I immediately disabled AutoGen again and not run with it enabled since.

I'm wanting/needing to run SquawkBox for the online flight I'm doing (CTP event) and found previously that the sim doesn't like things being connected to it via SimConect. I've had SC time-outs in the NGX previously, and with other add-ons that use it internally in the sim. Basically, FSX is too much hassel, and I want a hassel-free flight.

The sim doesn't like things being connected to it through a Microsoft-developed product to be used with the sim?

If you're talking about SB4, the main issue is that for whatever reason, the internal module was written poorly (on the pilot client side, not the sim). Run SB4 from the Start menu, instead of the FSX menu commands. Issue gone.

FSX is well worth the effort if you set it up properly.

Agreed! Since installing both SP's and indeed running SB4 outside of FSX, I have had no issues at all, even when using add-on sceneries. I have to say that FSX runs very stable on my machine with no real issues.

For the guys getting the CTD's I remember that there was a commonly reported issue with 64bit systems and running out of memory causing the sim to crash. I have not personally experienced this issue so I take it that it must have been sorted out.

Kind regards

I thought that was the 32bit systems...

I have never had an out of mem error. Ever (even on my old 32bit).

It was / is... folks still having trouble.

And my scenery's reference was to a couple freeware... nothing payware ever gave me trouble.

I run 64-bit OS.

It doesn't run out of memory - it crashes, due to memory leaks in the base sim, and subsequent corruption of memory as the simulator runs.

Best regards,

Robin.
