October 13, 201213 yr How would I, on the PMDG 737, fly the approach feather manually? By this I mean riding LNAV/VNAV and AP right until I'm lined up a few miles out...I know I'd disconnect first the autopilot, and then by this time VNAV would've already switched off to where I set VREF +5? My goal is I guess to still have the AT control the speed, but me controlling the plane vertically and laterally? If I also pressed VOR/LOC and then APP, would the two localizer and G/S bugs stay there as reference points? I apologize for the conflated questions, but I don't know exactly how to communicate this. I'm sure you guys will have a much more clear answer! Thanks! :help:
October 13, 201213 yr If you're looking to fly the remainder of the approach manually, the way you described it is all set up just fine. Auto Throttle will control the speed, and as long as the proper ILS frequency is set and active, you'll have the localizer and glide-slope bugs to help you out. As far as pressing LOC and APP modes on the autopilot, that isn't really necessary here. If you want the plane to fly the localizer alone (automatically), then have an autopilot active and LOC mode on. If you want the aircraft to fly the full ILS, APP mode is the correct one. Procedures vary from airline to airline and pilot to pilot, but as far as I'm concerned if I want to fly the landing manually (which I usually do), I take over both the throttles and the stick somewhere around 200 AGL on the approach. Have fun! Elijah HoytCFI, CFII, CMEL, CSEL, CSES, IFR

October 14, 201213 yr What is an approach feather? I assume he means the procedure turn or other course reversal on the ILS/LOC. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
October 14, 201213 yr Keep in mind that it's not good practice to have the A/T on while hand flying. For a full autoland APP alone is not enough. You must also engage both APs! In general if you keep the AP off and follow the FD you can hand fly any phase of the flight you want, as long as the FMC is setup properly. Well in theory at least, as it needs some practice! Good luck!!! George Golas ---------------------- I hate gravity!
