Engine sound in the VC

Featured Replies

I've just started flying the MD-11 after a few weeks of flying something else and realized that I cannot hear the engines in the VC but I can hear them fine outside. I can't remember if I could hear them before so the question is should I be hearing engine sounds in the cockpit and if yes, any ideas why they would stop?

You sure you're not hearing them at all? In the VC you're sitting pretty far ahead of them, so most of the sound you'll hear is the packs, but you should still hear some of it, especially when starting the engines.

You should be able to hear them in 2D and VC. The main times you hear them are:

* During start

* During taxi (depending on your sound system/hearing, you can hear the whine in particular ramp up around 30-35% N1)

* During takeoff (particularly as the fans start to really make a noise near takeoff power)

* When the packs are off

Once you're in flight, and moving quite fast, the wind noise tends to dominate, so you only really hear them when they approach climb/MCT power.

Remember that you're in front of the engines, and that they are some 60 feet behind you. As a passenger IRL, I don't really recall hearing them except during start and takeoff - other noises dominate them. I don't remmber it being that noisy, either (note: highly subjective).

As always, quality of sound recording equipment varies, but you can hardly hear the engines:

You can hear them accelerate during taxi though. A lot of the sound comes through the fuselage, which most sound recording equipment can't capture.

Best regards,

Robin.

I know I'm supposed to hear them at start-up and especially on takeoff but I don't. I thought accu-feel could be the problem so I turned it off with no luck. I also tried re-installing but no joy there either. I hear my other planes fine (-NGX, QW 146, Eaglesoft CX 2.0) so this is just strange.

Check your sound config in FS. The engines want to be set to 50, along with most of the other settings.

Chris,

also make sure that your windows sound settings (speaker configuration!) corresponds to your actual speaker setup. As an example say you have two speakers connected to your PC but windows is set to something using more than two, this might lead to certain channels being sent to speakers that do not exist, so you can't hear them.

Cheers,

Markus
