October 26, 201213 yr Hi Folks, Just completed my FSDT trilogy over the weekend... I now have all three products installed... Nice job FSDT... Couple questions - how do real aircraft treat Hilo ? I was flying the Tin Mouse in Aloha retro "Funbird" colors from PHNL to PHTO using RC4... Since the winds were out of the East gusting to 18 - ATC directed me West to setup for the approach on 8 - right into the side of the volcano... Clouds were around 3K - so not real good for the visual... How would real world operations handle this ? 26 is the only ILS so would airliners always use 26 no matter what the winds are doing ? Since the elevation increases steeply off the approach end of 8 - would an airliner using 8 fly a normal box GA pattern for landing there ? Is there a way to emulate real world procedures in RC4 ? Any help or input appreciated - especially if familiar with Hilo operations... Regards, Scott
October 27, 201213 yr The only instrument approach plates at airnav.com (search phto) are for 21 and 26, which would suggest liners don't use 08. Might do in VMC, but it doesn't really appear your situation counts. Hope that helps. Mike Mike Dryden
October 27, 201213 yr Looking at the approach charts for Hilo the options are an ILS for Rwy 26 and a circling approach off that. Weather minima is 500-1 up to 700-2 depending on the aircraft category and circling to the north of 08-26 only. Or a VOR/DME or Tacan-A approach tracking inbound on the 325R http://download.aopa.org/ustprocs/current/PC-1/ito_vor_dme_or_tacan_a.pdf Either way knowing there's some serious real estate just west of the field makes for an interesting approach. Hope this helps. Pete.
October 27, 201213 yr Author Hi Mike/Pete, Thanks for the help... Appreciate it... Ahh - I forgot about the "circle to land" approach on an ILS landing... I really need to get my instrument rating one of these days... I'm not sure if RC4 will let me do that but I'll look... Regards, Scott
October 28, 201213 yr Author Make sure you have enough fuel loaded for your divert airport Hah - that's the nice thing about flying the islands - all the airports are a. Easy diving for a 737... Regards, Scott
