On a quest for a darker night

Featured Replies

Try this in FSX.CFG, you have noithing to loose. :)

[GRAPHICS]

DAY_THRESHOLD=x

NIGHT_THRESHOLD=x

acceptible values for x are 0 to 65535.

Defaults:

DAY: 32768

NIGHT: 4096

These represent the amount of 'ambient' light at the ends of the day/night blend threshold. Zero is perfect dark, 65535 is full day sun at noon in the summer.

This had no affect when I put in in FSX.cfg. Removing it.

Don't forget about the DIGITAL VIBRANCE setting on the Nvidia Control Panel. I have it set to +70% and my night time results look great. It's easy to set and requires no restarts!

That really didn't 'darken', just enhanced colors. But thank anyway!

This has been ticking me off for awhile. FSX IS SO BRIGHT AT NIGHT. Even with phitt injection tool, the moon still shines EVERYTHING so bright, it's rediculous!!!!

Maybe there is some ENB setting or something? Mod? Anything....

During the night in real life, unless you are landing at a big airport, you cant even see the WING. Let alone the GROUND.

Anybody?

ADJUST your MONITOR. Brightness, Contrast and GAMMA

I assume you are using a LCD monitor.

Have you done anything to calibrate your Monitor. LCDs tend to have a default that does not have full BLACK. ie they are set BRIGHTER than they should be, for use in Brightly Lit rooms,

What else does this digital vibrance do?

It makes the picture color richer, brighter and cleaner. Used with other settings, colors are retained while adjusting for a darker image overall.

Officially, NVIDIA says:

Digital Vibrance: Color Separation and intensity; helps to compensate for lighting conditions in the workspace.

Gamma: The brightness of mid-tones without affecting shadows and highlights.

Contrast: The difference between the lightest and darkest parts of the desktop.

Brightness: The lightness or darkness of your display.

Hue: Adjusts the overall color of the image.

In use, I always leave the Color channel setting to "All channels" and I never touch the Hue (leave at +0%).

The best way to get the settings "right" is to EXPERIMENT. Put FSX in a large window (alt-enter) so you can see the NVIDIA Control Panel. The effects are immediate. No need to "Apply" the settings unless you want them to be saved. You can jot the settings down and may find different favorite settings for day, night, dawn, and dusk.

There are so many combinations (and easy to change) that I haven't found a need for the other shader packages like ENB or SweetFSX.

One thing though, NVIDIA Control Panel doesn't sharpen the image. Sharpening has always puzzled me as something that counteracts anti-aliasing and weather visibility. Maybe someone can comment further.

One final thought. You can't achieve a convincing dark night while sitting in a well lit room. Ambient light ruins the effect. If you can't darken the room, wait until dark and turn off the lights.

Brightness: The lightness or darkness of your display.

It helps to think of the brightness setting as the "black point" instead. If it's set too high, what should be black on your screen will be too bright.

In order to get the black point right, I had to turn brightness on my monitor down to zero.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

OK guys, I have solved this issue for me.

The solution was ENB Plus Natrual mod from the REX forums. (http://www.realenvironmentxtreme.com/forums/index.php?/topic/14771-natural-enbplus-download-included/)

Boy, it makes the night BLACK. Which is great. Try it out! Although to download it, you need to be a registered REX user at their forums.

The FXAA injector tool is giving me a pretty believable darkness at night time.

If you think that gives you darkness, try the other one out. Wow. P.S, I love your sig!!

Good point, especially since most monitors are cold fluorescent backlit LCDs. I'm sure dynamic “local dimming” LED monitors do a better job with night time flying.

(Need to be careful. This is starting to sound like a hardware post!).

Monitor contrast should be set as high as possible without looking garish.

My monitor brightness is 0, contrast is 70.

In the Catalyst Control Center:

Gamma 1.3, range is 0.5 to 3.5

Brightness and contrast at default.

I second that although i set gamma at 0.7 when flying at night (our monitors may differ, mine has led backlight)

Abit lower in Catalist (My digital screens) i have set the saturation at 150 and contrast at 130. This makes the use of ENB or SweetFX obsolete. Desktop looks awfull with this settings but FSX looks very good.

I used it too but I felt it made things too dark in the cockpit during the day if you are facing the sun and I was struggling to read things. I'm still yet to find a lighting addon that works at all times of day in FSX.

  • 1 year later...

Hi guys..  i know old topic, but is there any ENB or anything that can make my airplane wings black at night, but realistic in the daytime??

i was watching some vids on yuotube and it made me realize how bright my FSX is @night..

thanks.

You may also want to look at the free FS Water Configurator

http://www.strikingsoftware.com/fswc.shtml

This only changes the water shaders, wont do anything for a darker night. SweetFX is the best for darker nights.

Check out my screenshots with my settings for Sweetfx http://forum.avsim.net/topic/446618-dancing-in-the-night/
