GTX 680n with 8xS & 4x Sparse Grid Supersampling

Featured Replies

I don t have any problems running 4x sgss on my 680. I don t notice much of any performance difference with 2x.... i also don t see a huge difference visually.

You need to try with 3 plus overcast layers

so, who is running the 680 here? :) i'd like them to test my cloudtest for me.

Hey All,

Not sure whether I actually achieved 8xS+4SGSS greatness. My inspector settings are:

8xS [Combined: 1x2 SS + 4x MS]

4x Sparse Grid Supersampling

AF: 16X

I just flew into KBUF with the Carenado C90 and some weather (see METAR and TAF below). I have FSDT KBUF, all of Word Not Allowed's display settings and got about 30 FPS. Stutters only presented on a REXE+OD weather upload but otherwise the approach and landing were very smooth. KBUF had UT2 traffic running at a heavy setting as usual. I am going to leave my settings at this as it seems I have found "The Balance" and get amazing performance. Last night I flew the NGX out of KFLL on my way to KATL and the only place I saw stuttering was on my way into KATL with a gaggle of traffic. Weather was OPUS at the time with REXE+OD textures. I then took the Flight1 MD80 Pro from KATL to KORD (FSDT) and saw great virtually stutter free performance. I updated drivers to 310.54 today and have not seen an issue with FSX performance since. I make NO CLAIMS about general performance and can only attest to the smoothness I am getting now with this rig.

I hope this helps guide some of the decisions of the OP.

Word Not Allowed,

I'd love to help because you give so much to the FSX community but I fear my inexperience would hinder the test results.

Dan

Jose,

Enjoy whatever card you choose. Just as reminder I really didn't notice a difference between 4XSGSS and 2XSGSS visually. I am glad I went with the FTW+ versions as I feel they will make a big difference in my outside of FSX gaming.

Now I do :P

Well, if you would be so kind...

I guess you are running my setup - the tweaks, BP=0 etc. Couple of settings are important, because they impact the frames quite a bit:

- clouds resolution 2048, DXT5, preferrably from REX (to be exact, just choose some theme to install, you can backup the current one in the preferences, I'll follow)

- Nvidia Inspector set up according to my guide + 4x SGSS

- FFTF should be 0.20

- LOD should be 6.5

Also when you load the situation, press S once to exit to external. Do not move, pan or unpause.

Take the FPS measurement with the FRAPS.

I don't expect exact results, just that there is *much* higher FPS as reported in this thread?

I thank you for this endeavour.

Word Not Allowed, when I start the situation, it's already in external view. Do you want me to stay in external or you want me to hit S so I can go back inside the aircraft?

BTW, I did a CLEAN install of FSX for you, just default FSX Acceleration with your CFG/NI tweaks and default textures with the situation in external view, and I'm getting ROCK SOLID 30FPS. Not one single dip in FPS. This is with 4xSGSS but default textures. I will install REX-E now and install the DXT5, 2048MB textures and see what happens at the same settings.

Ok Word Not Allowed, benchmark is running with the following as per your request:

FSX Acceleration

i7-3770K @ 5.0Ghz/1.5v

g.Skill 8GB 2400 DDR3 RAM

EVGA 680 FTW+ 4GB @ 1293/6840/2.12v

1280x720x32 resolution (720P projector)

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

FFTF - 0.20

LOD - 6.5000

NI as per your guide plus 4XSGSS

REX-E 2048MB DXT5 textures

CFG as per your guide plus I always add DisablePreload=1. My system stutters without it.

I'll be back later with the results...

UPDATE: Ok Word Not Allowed, with the above settings/configuration, here is my result:

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg

9001, 300000, 29, 31, 30.003

Hola Efrain :)

Can you please try 8xSGSS?

EDIT: oh, that resolution sort of gives it all away, I guess

Wow thank you very much for doing the work!

I must say this result is nothing short of great.

It puzzles me though if you maybe forgot to turn off the vsync tweak - or did I forget to mention to turn it off??? :O :o

I just noticed you wrote "FPS LOCKED @ 30FPS with 1/2 refresh rate enabled on NI"

Could you repeat with unlocked FPS in FSX and vsync functions all fully off? I think the 4xSGSS test would suffice, no need to reload 3-4 times ^_^

And if your view is loading in external, then leave it like that. Mine loads in VC, maybe that's EZCA playing. I have to press S to get into external.

Without Vsync it's probably going to shoot up even more. Would like to know how much!

But what is so miraculous is that you are getting 19fps AVG with 8xSGSS. With locked FPS I get 19 with 2xSGSS!

Damn monster card... I want it.
