TPE start question

Featured Replies

Its a minor thing, but when I start my J41 I hear the starter for a couple of seconds before the props start turning. My understanding of single shaft turboprop engines, the 331 in particular, is that if the starter is turning, everything is turning. This includes the prop. Is this an FSXism because they think all TP engines are PT6 type free turbines? Just wondering if that struck anyone else as odd. On a lighter note, I love my J41!

Bingo.

This YouTube video shows startup and powerback of an Eastern Airways J41, and the prop spins as soon as you hear the motor, so it's just a restriction of FSX, as you rightly said.

PS: You'll note the startup sounds in the PMDG are spot on, based on this video!

Maybe kind of advertising...

But this has been overcome in the Aerosoft OV-10 Bronco X, which uses the TPE 331 too.

Also slower "spool" down time of the props when they are not getting feathered (on the start locks).

And finally the option to do realistic airstarts by windmilling engines.

Apart from that the PMDG J41 is among the best turboprop aircraft available for FSX.
