Featured Replies

This should be interesting based on the description A large, round, glacier. OK. Lets all go get it.

Enjoy.

Thank you.

I guess the AOTD gods heard me complain about yesterday's AOTD, because today's certainly doesn't spawn you right on top of it. This is a pretty good flight and then the search can be as long as it takes.

I would recommend a fairly fast plane. I used the RV-6 and it worked out well. By the way, we've been here before. Can you guess when?

Here's a shot of the cache when I finally found it.

And, finally landing back at Yakutat.

Hope you have as much fun as I did with this one.

Thank you.

I got it, that is some BIG search area. And a lot of recearch for me to nail it down! Glad I took the P-51 for the round trip. You can even see my shadow heading for the target.

I took the Maule, set out on a heading of 300 degrees. I noted where I was on the top-down view when the indicator said I passed the 10 mile mark, and again when it went back to 20. These two points gave me two points on a circle, and I estimated a perpendicular from the center of the line between them. The aerocache was somewhere on that line, not easy to tell exactly where because there wasn't a scale, but you don't really need it. I was flying toward where I thought it would be when I got a BSOD. First in quite a while.

Second flight I set out on a heading of about 270. The spot where I crossed the 10 mile mark gave me another point on the circle, and the perpendiculars from this and the previous line crossed near a feature on the glacier. I flew almost straight to it, just from eyeballing it.

I used the aerocache marker, but not the Point of Interest marker, so I had to actually see the aerocache to get it. I think I'll do it this way from now on when I'm forced to use the marker.

Try it on paper first. Draw a circle, and put three points on it, not equidistant. Draw lines between the points. Notice how lines at 90 degrees from the center of those lines meets somewhere? That's the center of the circle. Happy hunting! :D

Beats heck out of "search an area the size of Lanai" doesn't it? :D Stupid Water View aerocache.
