System freeze

Featured Replies

I am stumped...last week I uninstalled FSGlobal, and updated to Nvidia Beta drivers...I play BF3 every now and then and it worked fine...

I then did a flight with the Simcheck A300 on Monday night and for the first time ever my system locked up....fans were still going, there was just no sound, no mouse, keyboard was totally ineffective, and the screen showed the cockpit of the A300 as if it was a photo. I had to press the reset button on the case and reboot the machine.

I had a look at the windows error log, and apart from registering that I rebooted the machine "improperly", it did not register any errors whatsoever.

I then performed a few more flights with other aircraft and all was well.

Last night I tried the A300 again....about an hour into the flight, same thing happened, no sound, no mouse, no keyboard, totally unresponsive.

My graphics card was at 60C and the CPU at 40C, the loads were well below limits, so I am lost!

Any ideas please? Should I reinstall the Sim?

I get system "freezes" almost every time I fly. The freezes can occur during almost any phase of the flight (as early as taxiing, but usually after I'm at cruise level). It happens with the feelthere E-jet v2 Embraer-175, the Maddog MD-83 and the Level-D 767-300. Once the lock-up or freeze occurs, if I don't touch anything (i.e. no mouse clicks or keyboard entries), the system will "thaw out" (aka un-freeze) in about 8 minutes. Everything is then fine again. On rare occasions, I'll have two freezes during a flight. My flights are normally less than three hours. I've just been putting up with it. I do tend to run a ton of FS add-ons (FS Commander, AS2012, STB, Radar Contact, FS2Crew, Track IR, DreamTeam, Orbx, EZ Cam...). I'm running two LG W2252TQ monitors on a eVGA nVidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti DS. My frame rate is normally very acceptable unless I'm in a highly detailed terrain (Orbx, Aerosoft US Cities X) with a good dose of broken clouds. I think I've upgraded my processor to about as high as I can (Q9650 @ 3.0 GHz) and expanded my Ram to 8GB. FSX sure would be more enjoyable without these freeze-ups. I, too, am very interested in anyone's thoughts. - Larry

You need to download and run App Crash View and copy and paste the results of the crash here in this post - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html.

Larry,

You should do the same and download that app and see what is causing your system to freeze up. If there are results, post them here. If not, you'll need to look in your Event Viewer and look in the Application section to see if there are any red or yellow errors. To get to the Event Viewer, click on the Start button, then, in the search bar type Event Viewer and look up and click on Event Viewer in the menu. Once there, look to the left sidebar for Application. You'll have to write down and post any error message for FSX.

Also, as a friendly reminder, you need to remove your system specs from your signature as that is no longer allowed. We are now putting our system specs in our profile and that shows up in the left sidebar (look at my sidebar for an example).

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks Jim, I had already downloaded the app, the curious thing is, after the lock up, there are no errors reported, it is as if it doesnt register that the machine has stopped recognising the mouse, keyboard, and the screen is frozen.

The PC is still running normally, all fans working, hard drive going normally, the only difference is that I have a static screen to look at!

Hi Will,

Since you system only freezes while running the A300, I would uninstall that. If you reinstall it, right click on the installer and run it as an Administrator. Some of these older programs need to be installed as an Administrator. Also make sure UAC is disabled. To disable, click on the Start button and in the search bar type User Access Controls then look up in the menu and click on Change User Access Settings. Make sure you have the A300 SP2. They say any prior version must be uninstalled and SP2 installed instead as it is a whole new installer. That's important and I mention it only as the new installer makes sure the product is installed correctly. Right click on the A300.exe program and make sure it is at least 2.0.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks, Jim. I'll follow your suggestions for trouble shooting the freeze-ups. I also removed my system specs from my signature and moved that info to my profile page. That makes a lot more sense and is a good way to inventory your "hangar" of FS hardware and software.

Thanks for the quick response to this Larry. Appreciate it. Hope you get the freeze/apphangs figured out soon!

Jim
