November 30, 201213 yr Hi, for some weeks now I have strange CTDs with FS2004 (german version) running in a WinXP environment. They are strange insofar, as there is no freezing, no CTD message. FS2004 just disappears from the desktop from one moment to the other. This occurs mostly at the very moment when I choose a saved flight from the "Flüge" (Flights) menü, sometimes already when clicking on the menu bar. It does not occur from within the simulation while flying, only when moving within the flights menu. The problem occurs particularly since I use HJG 727-100 (HJG uses the Vistaliner 727 model), especially with Condor and Germania repaints, at multiple locations; for instance after a flight OMSJ-OMDB, after a flight LXGB-GCTS and after a departure from GCTS. All repaints are taken from HJGs site (http://www.simviation.com/hjg/aircraft/boeing/b727-100.htm). Initially, I did some flights using the plane without problems, perhaps I just didn't choose another flight while simming. After some of this CTDs occured (sometimes after an hour of flying, sometimes only minutes after starting FS2004, but - I repeat - exclusively when choosing a saved flight), I removed the above mentioned repaints and tested FS2004 over more than 6 hours running uninterrupted with another repaint of the 727 (Baltic International from the same website) standing cold and dark at GCTS, choosing some other flights with other planes from hour to hour and coming back to GCTS. No CTD occured then. So if you see, I believe to have identified the Condor and Germania repaints of the 727 as culprits. Perhaps these textures have an incompatibility with some phototerrain; I use Flytampa Dubai "reloaded" and Project Canarias' Canarias 2006 phototerrain. The latter - although some people have problems with it - shouldn't be the problem as I used it many hours flying in my DC-6. Now, what I kindly ask for is some confirmation of my suspect or other experiences regarding these 727-100 repaints, and your opinions regarding this strange type of CTD (perhaps I'm completely wrong and somebody knows what causes such types of CTD without any freezing and without any message?). Many thanks in advance! Harald Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.
November 30, 201213 yr Check the format of the aircraft textures. They need to be in either 32-bit or DXT-3. FS9 doesn't recognize any other format and can cause it to crash. If you find any textures that aren't either one or the other, you can download DXTBMP if you don't already have it and resave the texture. November 30, 201213 yr Author Thanks Kevin for your help. I'm almost sure that all the textures had the right format, as I had already converted them from 32bit to DXT3 via DXTBMP. Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.
November 30, 201213 yr Hi Harald, First thing I would suggest is that after seeing that you were starting you flights from a saved flight that you try loading the default cessna at KSEA, then shutting down the sim. Reload FS9 and select your aircraft, airport etc.from the User Interface and see if you have the same problem. If you are using the HJG panel it may be that it is not properly initializing everything when you start from that saved flight. Your saved flights might be causing the problem. Mel
November 30, 201213 yr Author Hi Mel, thank you very much for your response. I have decided to test the causa even more radically, banning the 727 completely from my virtual hangar for a certain time and deleting all saved flights using it. So I will rule out if "only" the 727 is the cause. By the way, Aerosoft promotes the DreamFleet 727 on its German website for 12.50 EUR ($16.25), and today - with Ians recent recommendation in mind - I could not resist... Anyway, I liked the HJG 727 very much due to her ability as a "trainer" for a fast jet after changing over from the DC-6. Harald Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.
December 2, 201213 yr Author Hi Mel, some feeback to your helpful post: As I stated above, I had not used the 727 anymore and did my planned flight from GCTS to KPHL via a 12 hour trip using the DC-6, arriving with the last gallons of fuel. In the meantime the postman brought me my ordered Dreamfleet 727, and I began to read the manual. Interestingly, they suggest a similar procedure as you did above. My FS2004 worked fine all these hours (using autopilot...). After no CTD occured even after I saved my flight from time to time, choosed another flight and continued my transatlantic trip, I began following your suggested procedure. Then I choosed the 727 and did a flight KPHL-KABE. All worked fine again, no CTD. So I have to say Thanks again for your advice. Now I can practice again with HJGs 727 for the Dreamfleet model, which I will install not earlier than at Christmas, when I have enough time to do excessive testing and flying. Best regards from Dresden! Harald Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.
December 3, 201213 yr So I have to say Thanks again for your advice. My pleasure, I'm glad I could help. Thank you for the kind words. Mel
