USA Roads over MS texture tiles with roads...

Featured Replies

Just got USA Roads and I'm finding that it seems like in place they're perfect, and in other spots it's as if the USA Roads are on top of default tiles that have roads...Needless to say, it gets pretty messy here and there!Any ideas how to get around this, or am I just imagining things?(Like a road that goes right through my backyard?)ThanksAndrew

USa roads renames all the MS default road files with .xxx so that they are not called, but the default landclass textures also have a road effect in the built up areas. I don't know how to get around that, unless you install photo-real textures in the area of interest.scott s..

>(D)efault "city" type textures need to be re-done (well, any>that have roads for that matter),Yep, I'm surprised no one has done that yet. I would have thought it would happen within a week of the release of USA Roads. No, I'm not volunteering :) as I am not much of a texture artist and have my plate full with redoing coastlines for the time being.Dan

Thanks all - "I'm not volunteering" -Well, guess what?I AM!I've been a professional graphic designer for about 14 years... been using Photoshop the whole time.If I can find the relevant tiles (or if someone can point them out) I'll get cracking! Thanks,Andrew

You are a brave man, Andrew. For more information on default ground textures, including a complete list of them and also of all land class values, please get the Terrain S.D.K. at http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimul...wnloads_sdk.asp This should keep you busy for a while! Good luck.Best regards.Luis

Thanks Luis!I'm housecleaning my PC today... I'll dowload the SDK as soon as I can.I can't imagine it's really THAT hard - is it?Perhaps if it was easy, Flight1 would have included replacement textures. I don't know.Cheers!Andrew>You are a brave man, Andrew. >>For more information on default ground textures, including a>complete list of them and also of all land class values,>please get the Terrain S.D.K. at >http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimul...wnloads_sdk.asp> >>This should keep you busy for a while! Hi AndrewIt would be a fantastic contribution if you did this! Hope you'll focus on completing a relatively small area first so we can see the results (if that's a practical approach). Jeez, what if when FS2006 comes out, FS9 already surpasses it?David

Hey David -I'm doing it for ME, baby! ;)hee heeI just can't have these silly random default texture roads crisscrossing all over the place....As long as I can create/edit the default textures, and make new ones, we'll be set. My hopes are that I'm not duplicating any efforts already in progress, and I'll post on the Flight1 forums just to make sure.CheersAndrew>>Hi Andrew>>It would be a fantastic contribution if you did this! One thing to keep in mind, and I don't know if this is correct, but removing roads from landclass tiles will remove roads from outside the US...it would be great if we could get a USA landclass custom set of textures that would work with usa roads, and keep the existing landclass tiles for outside the area usa roads covers.I almost never fly outside of the us and southern canada, so I'm okay with just replacing them, or having a batch file to switch them, but others might want to have their roads and eat them too!Best,sg

Hi Scott - "but removing roads from landclass tiles will remove roads from outside the US"I'm not sure if I understand, but I'm not planning on trying to remove the "generated" roads, just edit/replace the bitmap tiles which have -images- of roads on them!Andrew

Exactly. Those textures are used outside the usa where the landclass roads are often the only indication of an urban area. Without those roads, many non-us urban areas will have very few roads at all...sorry I wasn't more clear!Best,sg

Ah, Flight Simulator Politics! ;)I think I understand - there are default global textures from which I'd be editing out the roads...Well, that makes it a bit tricky, doesn't it?I know nothing about how one would designate that a region that replaces the default textures with updated ones... seems like this should be slipping over to the scenery design forum.Andrew

You might just want to be a wee bit careful and re-read the license agreement. Modification and distribution of the default images could be interpreted as a violation of the terms and Tom would likely be compelled to remove anything posted to the libraries.

Not saying it's not worth doing, with the caveat that you need to stay within the US or things will start to look a bit sparse...I'd use the editied textures all the time, for one.Best,sg
