Yes, so much for waiting for the "next best thing". I have been flight simming for 12 years now, every month in every forum there is a thread about "let's wait for this X component and not waste money on what soon to be an ancient CPU" and the next best thing always turns out to be a disappointment. What is true is the hours, days, and months we spend not owning the "real" best option (which is what's available) are times that are lost and will never be recovered.

For once I fully agree with this rhetoric.

I moved last year. I point that out because I had told myself that I would build a new system once I found my new home. But the talk of Ivy was in the air, so I waited instead of building a Sandy system.

 

The "issues" (that's a generic type term) surrounding Ivy, heat, performance v. Sandy coupled with (IMO) the disappointment of the 600 series from nVidia means I should/could have built a nice Sandy system. But then I looked off into the future and saw Haswell on the horizon... So I'll wait to see how the numbers play out and then see what the 700 series from nVidia shows and finally decide to build my new system.

 

Where that takes me is anyone's guess!

Let's hope GK110 and Haswell are powerful chips... If so, I will be upgrading this summer/spring.

People just don't learn. That's the problem, everyone is always overhyping every other release.

Haswell is supposed to be a 15% faster clock for clock than SB, more or less the same gap as between SB and Nehalem, only that SB also brought an amazing OC improvement, but get used to it, a 20 - 25% performance increase in between tocks is what's to be expected (accounting for RAM performance increases too), and actually that's enough to make it the next best thing. It will beat anything else out there in FSMark11 and any other FSX test. Not by a huge margin, no, but people are raving to a meager 2-3% perf boost from going 2133 to 2400 memory, this is going to be 10 times better after all... unless Intel keeps screwing up with TIM and stuff

8-10% more overclock is like 400 - 500MHz, that's a lot. People were expecting that from Ivy because of Tri-Gate and the 22nm process, and it turned out to be a disappointment, but they made up for it with that unexpected 5% IPC boost.

 

I'll be happy with 4.8 - 5GHz and no need to de-lid. Then if it's better, that's a plus... and if they completely drop the ball, or just focus 100% on the IGP, we can always skip it.

Oh, alright. Yeah, obviously with a delidded IB you are sort of half way between SB and the especulated Haswell performance

These specs aren't anything special but I wouldn't say disappointing. If they don't screw up the TIM like with Ivy, they might overclock to 4.8 - 5 GHz without too many problems. Compared to Sandy it should be a good upgrade then. But maybe I'm just being over-optimistic, time will tell. I can wait forever to upgrade my i5 2500K, but I'm not gonna, I will just upgrade to Haswell. Broadwell is gonna suck anyway, as it's - according to rumours - gonna be an irreplaceable CPU fixed to the motherboard.

Put it this way, you have a Haswell clocked at 4.8-5.0ghz to get that performance with a delidded 3770k you most have it clocked to 5.3-5.4ghz.

My 3770k runs @5.4ghz today thats HASWELL power today :wink:

 

here is a sreen when test mems in AIDA64 its 100% stable @5.4 can run FSMark11 @5.5 super Pi @5.6

@5.4 it need 1.52V i run @5.3 vcore 1.46v 24/7

Rather disappointing if true. Let's hope this is just due to an absolute absence of competition at the high end and not an indicator of clockspeed headroom.

 

Most of the 5-15% projected clock-for-clock performance I believe was expected to come from changes in the micro architecture. Anand's article also mention peak power in Haswell would be higher than IB. What could matter is whether or not the chips run cooler and I think that is unknown at this point, and moreover, w/ unlocked multipliers to boot, will there be improvements in raw overclocking tolerance? I think it's still quite possible. So, for me, even w/ no change in projected [default] clock speed it's way to early to have disappointment.
