December 11, 201213 yr Hello I've yet to get this software but have been showing interest in it and on the whole it seems impressive but my question is i wonder what the performance drain is. I ask this because when i use REX+ with alot of clouds i get a FPS drop (also when entering them). Clouds being a known hit on FPS. I've seen some great overcast and cloudy skies with Opus which really adds to the immersion but there must be some hit on performance with all those clouds but i hear no one complaining of performance issues. So is this the case? Thanks. Kind Regards Simon.
December 12, 201213 yr OPUS just provides the data and tells FSX how to predict it. The only drop in FPS you would get is the coverage of clouds and the textures being used by REX. As for OPUS you should only get a cpu point or two.
December 12, 201213 yr Yes I didn't really notice a drop in smoothness going from AS2012 to Opus Chris Strobel KSNA
December 12, 201213 yr Commercial Member Hi Simon Running FSX with and without OpusFSX you will notice little if any difference in FPS. You will probably gain FPS if you use our cameras over other packages. We would recommend using low resolution and non HD cloud textures since you don't notice the difference (they can actually look more realistic and less harsh) and the FSX performance is much better. Try our demo, that will give you the FPS figures. Regards Cheryl

Regards Cheryl Hi Cheryl I do prefer to use the low res and non HD textures for better performance via use of REXE+. With their weather engine i can still get a fair drop in FPS so seldom use it but i wonder if Opus does the same. As you say the demo may provide these answers. Thanks for the replies all. Kind Regards Simon.
December 13, 201213 yr After much trial and error I have managed to get my P3d setup working smoothly on my moderate machine. I like to have my weather setting on max and noticed with Rex and AS2012 that with overcast conditions my flying would become a slide show . I installed Opus and I am loving it. The overcast conditions are great and for some reason my performance is not being impacted like I had with other software. Not sure what it is about Opus but my machine loves it. I am using Rex textures so I would have thought I would have had the same slide show with Opus in really overcast conditions..... but I am not. Roy Jordan

December 13, 201213 yr Actually I saw i slight increase in frame rates without AS2012 running any more and just using OpusFSX. As previously stated the only real bottleneck would be caused by any textures that were installed by REX or AS2012. Unfortunately I can't use the 32 bit cloud textures on my machine without sending my FPS into the teens so I use the DTX5 compressed textures @ 1024x1024.
December 13, 201213 yr Another thing I noticed with Opus was that I hardly ever get a crash anymore. With AS2012 I would get stack hash errors a couple times a day, and had chalked it up to my overclock, but now with Opus I never get stack hash errors anymore, only the once in a blue moon crash from clicking around too much with a bunch of external simconnct clients.
