December 17, 201213 yr Altough I understand the basic principles of a SID there are may chart details I cannot figure out. As an example I include a SID chart from Marseille,France,SID rwy 13L/R and a screen shot of the MD-11 MCDU. In particular I wish to clearify the following : 1) MNM climb gradient : 6 % to FL80 Is it possible to tune the autopilot to keep that gradient or does one to handfly the aircraft and aim for 6 $ ? 2) Alt Restriction : 4000 Means what ? What to do when reaching 4000 feet ? I selected the SID TINO 2B ( see attached MCDU screen shot ) 3) What is that 470 ( see MCDU ) right after the RW13L ? Where is it coming from ? There is no indication on the chart. 4) What is the D178D indicating ? A distance of 17.8 nm from MRM ? How about the D after D178D ? Thank you for you help Hubert Werni Herbert Werni

There are tables with most of these charts that convert the % values to V/S values. You can set that on the AP if you need to, but the MD-11 is very powerful, so I doubt you'd have a problem with that gradient. 2) Alt Restriction : 4000 Means what ? What to do when reaching 4000 feet ? I don't see an altitude restriction in either one of those pictures. This normally means that after departing you climb to 4000, until ATC instructs you to climb higher. 3) What is that 470 ( see MCDU ) right after the RW13L ? Where is it coming from ? There is no indication on the chart. This is something the system adds in. I believe it's a point that keeps the aircraft flying straight ahead until a certain altitude above the ground (in this case, just about 400'). 4) What is the D178D indicating ? A distance of 17.8 nm from MRM ? How about the D after D178D ? Correct. 17.8nm. The D after it is just the naming convention, I believe. I could be wrong. December 17, 201213 yr Commercial Member What is the D178D indicating ? I think actually it is just a helper intersection for the SID. There are many such "non-waypoints" in SIDs that seem to be arbitraily named (though they tend to follow this format - DnnnD), and don't seem to reference anything in particular. To the SID designers however it obviously serves a purpose. Best regards, Robin.
