Client Scenery Requirements

Featured Replies

Now doing the network install. Question is what scenery should be installed on the client? I installed the UTX and GEX series, and will proceed with REX, what about UT2 traffic?

Thank you!

In would like to know the answer too. According to the FAQ page there is no mention of having to installed anything on the client apart from Opus.

The Getting Started for Networked PCs guide states that you will need to install the simulator and scenery onto your client systems, although some users share their scenery over the network successfully.

I am not familiar with UT2 traffic, you will have to try it and see.

Mario, what kind of hardware does your client have and what fps are you getting on it? Keep us updated on how it goes!

Fatback, If you click on my PC and look up under "other" you will see "Second computer on network with i920, 6GB RAM (1333), 5870 ATI Card, 2 monitors". It runs on W7 and has a Gygabyte UDR-58 board. It is only three years old. This is now my client computer and I haven't run FSX on this rig yet. I installed FSX and the scenery as per the OpusFSX manual. However, as my previous main FSX rig, with three monitors running the ATI 5870 card, I used to get around 30 fps and the flights with little Cessnas were quite smooth.

I installed FSX and the UTX and GEX scenery on my client. I am pretty sure REX will have to be installed on the client but was unsure about Ultimate Traffic II. But since this traffic add-on is scenery, I suspect it will have to be installed.

The main interest I have for OpusFSX are the cameras. EZdok doesn't work very well with TrackIr5 and the new 5.2 driver under Windows 8. Even when using an older driver the two programs are sketchy at best. So far, Opus FSX works flawlessly with TrackIr5's new driver; the renaming of the .manifest files doesn't impair TrackIr as EZdok does.

I am following the OpusFSX setup instructions to the letter, I will keep you posted.

Thanks! I'm using the weather now and love it but ultimately want to have a 2nd computer with a view out the left hand window of the cockpit alternating with outside spot views. Or maybe a client with two screens and have both! I'm just not sure whether to get a "high end" computer for the client or a middle of the road one. Looking forward to your updates...

Follow the guide to setting up FSX on the client to optimise its performance. It is not a 'flying' sim, it just follows its master so you shouldn't have too many problems but do need to optimise it. I usually use an ASUS gaming laptop (quad core, win 8 64 bit, 12Gb memory) and obtain good results.

Best of luck with your endeavours.

Thanks Stephen. Your description of the client's role is well understood. Can't wait to complete the setup and will report.

Fatback, I don't think the second machne has to be high end at all. The second computer of my sim setup before my upgrade was an AMD 6000+ with a NVIDIA 9600 GT and 4GB RAM. I ran Aivlasoft EFB and Plan-G on it without a glitch. Even with OpusFSX's client requirements of a second FSX sim install + scenery an average system should do the trick. After all as Stephen says, the client FSX is not a flying sim, just a slave.
