I am new to tileproxy, as of one day ago, but not new to FS (25 years now), and I cannot believe it has taken me so long to find this.

Anyway, I already prefer the server 3 option (Yahoo) as it seems to have an edge on the Bing server. however, the are certain areas where the resolution from Yahoo is so bad that even at airliner altitude it is only just useable. Trouble is, I fly GA low and slow.

Specifically, can someone please try the following two areas, using the number 3 server.

1. Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

2. Inverness, Scotland.

If you get perfect results, then I obviously need some coaching.

FYI, the Yahoo server is great in other areas. Florida, around Miami is excellent, and so is the Kalispel area of Montana. It might just be available files, but the above areas where I have issues do apprear to be excellent when viewing those areas in a regular browser.

Looking forward to your your feedback, and all the best for 2013.

Kenneth Kerr.

I just go onto maps.yahoo.com and check the area using the satellite imaging option - as far as I understand that is all that TP is doing, it is just being clever about it. A quick look around Inverness suggests that there's probably tiles up to about 1m per pixel however there seems to be a huge gap between that resolution and the next highest which I would vaguely estimate at about 40 or 50m per pixel. I would suggest that maybe your TP is limited to not use the highest resolution and therefore is having to make do with this rubbish one. FWIW Bing's coverage and range of resolutions seems much better for that area. From my brief forays Yahoo seems to be good for North America (and faster from what other people say) and Bing is better for Europe.

Yeah there are 2 values you want to look at - I don't have their actual names to hand at the moment sorry - one which sets the highest resolution that TP can use and the other is/are your level mapping and max lod values for the yahoo service.

There is a mapping tool that I use that is a great way to decide which map service to use (i.e Bing = Service1 or Yahoo = Service3) in a particular area. Here is the link:

http://www.flashearth.com/

I checked Yorkton, Saskatchewan with FlashEarth and found that Yahoo is poor (low res.) in your area. However, Bing is very good at high Res., but seems to be a gap in LOD as you zoom out to a larger area?? See attached pix. I use this tool to decide on which Service to use for any area of the world.

Good luck,

John G.

As a followup, I actually flew FSX/Tileproxy in the Yorkton area with both Bing(Service1) and Yahoo(Service3). The scenery with Bing was very good. I flew at about 4000' - see photos attached. One Yahoo photo was enough to show that Bing is far better in the Yorkton arera...

TileProxy is great,

John G.
